Abstract
This chapter reviews experimental methods that have been used to study various aspects of the tribology of piston rings in operating internal combustion engines. The discussion covers methods used to determine the thickness of the lubricating film between the ring and the cylinder wall, the axial and angular position of the ring within the ring groove, ring wear, piston assembly friction, ring zone temperatures, lubricant flow through the ring pack, the condition of the lubricant around the ring groove and oil consumption through mechanisms associated with ring pack lubrication.
