Abstract

This chapter studies the pump shaft and driver shaft alignment, which is very important for long useful equipment life and to extend the running time between repairs. One of the most important and least considered points of correct alignment is the relationship with the power transmitted from the motor to the pump. Types of misalignment are listed as vertical/angular misalignment, vertical/parallel misalignment, horizontal/angular misalignment, horizontal/parallel misalignment, and combined angular and parallel misalignment, and these are illustrated with diagrammatic representations. A variety of alignment techniques are listed, they are: reverse dial indicator alignment, rim and face alignment, straight edge alignment, and laser alignment. This chapter also highlights the general observations on the alignment process between shaftsand typical steps in developing and practicing the alignment sequence such as secure the pump to the base, always begin with the thinnest shims, use the minimum number of shims under any foot.
