Abstract

Material processing is a critical component of fabrication of medical devices as it decides various factors from final achievable properties, wear behavior of medical devices, etc. Some of the typical properties that get altered due to the processing conditions and route include strength, modulus fatigue, and wear resistance and fracture toughness. The current chapter reviews the process of forging of metals and alloys applied to implant materials in particular and their advantages and disadvantages in terms of achieving the desired properties. Discussion on the effect of various alloying additions on forging resistance and their impact on biocompatibility is also included besides the various die design considerations. Finally, some of the advanced methods of processing relevant to forging are also discussed. Some considerations on microstructural developments during processing and standardization efforts for forging and raw materials specifications for biomedical applications have been highlighted.
