Abstract
This chapter presents a preview of the book, “Advances in School Effectiveness Research and Practice” by David Reynolds, Bert P. M. Creemers, Pamela S. Nesselrodt, Eugene C. Schaffer, Sam Stringfield, and Charles Teddlie. It reviews the history and state of the art knowledge in the field, particularly, attempting to look outside the research base of the Anglo-Saxon countries of the United States and the United Kingdom. The chapter also reviews those research practices in terms of design, data collection, and data analysis that shows the utility of these strategies for advancing effectiveness knowledge and presents some creative new directions in which the field should profitably move if it is to fulfill its promise, such as appreciation of the importance of cross cultural variation and of the importance of the development of theoretical models.
