Abstract
This chapter focuses on object oriented programming (OOP). It starts with Y2K problem, solution of which brought little progress, but it tied up a lot of resources.. Although this situation paved the way for programmers, particularly those of the old schools like COBOL, to find suitable jobs, the chapter explains with great care why COBOL programmers should modernize and switch to object-oriented approach. The chapters lists the advantages of OOP like reusability and extensibility; and the techniques required to make the switch to object oriented programming. It also focuses on how to select the programming environment out of C++, Java, and Delphi. For old COBOL programmers, a brief description of newly emerging object oriented COBOL (OO-COBOL) and its main disadvantages are presented. The chapter also presents a real world example of advantages of object oriented programming.
