Abstract

Technical textiles are functional fabrics that have applications across various industries including agriculture (AgroTech), civil engineering and construction (BuildTech), footwear and garments (ClothTech), geotextiles (GeoTech), home textiles (HomeTech), manufacturing sectors (InduTech), healthcare and medical (MedTech), automobiles (MobilTech), environmental protection (OekoTech), packaging (PackTech), personal protection (ProTech), and sports (SportTech). These technical textiles are developed for high-tech and high-performance applications. Whereas, the term functional textiles is defined as the textile materials that possess some functionality and serve some special purpose rather than comfort and esthetic look. These special functions can be developed in textiles by either incorporation of speciality fibers and polymers or by applications of some surface finishing agents and surface treatments. These functionalities can be like barrier, protection, enhanced comfort, medication, sensory, actuation, and shielding. This chapter presents an overview of all these sectors of technical and functional textiles in brief.
