Abstract

Abstract De.sul.fo.re'gu.la. L. pref. de from; L. neut. n. sulfur sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo ‐, desulfuricating (prefix used to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate‐reducing procaryote); L. fem. n. regula a straight piece of wood or ruler; N.L. fem. n. Desulforegula a sulfate‐reducing bacterium shaped like a ruler. Desulfobacterota / Desulfobacteria / Desulfobacterales / Desulforegulaceae / Desulforegula Rod‐shaped cells, 1–1.3 µm × 2.6–3.0 µm. Occur singly or in pairs. Spore formation is not observed. Gram‐stain‐negative. Motile. Strictly anaerobic, having a respiratory type of metabolism. Chemoorganoheterotrophs, using C 4 –C 17 straight‐chain fatty acids as carbon sources and electron donors; the ones with an even number of carbon atoms were oxidized to acetate and electron donors with an odd number of carbon atoms were oxidized to acetate and propionate. No other substrates known. Sulfate serves as terminal electron acceptor and is reduced to H 2 S. Sulfite, thiosulfate, and nitrate are not used as a terminal electron acceptors. Mesophilic. Neutrophilic. Optimal growth temperature, 25–30°C. Media containing a reductant and vitamins are necessary for growth. The genus Desulforegula contains one described species and occurs in anoxic freshwater sediments. DNA G + C content (mol%) : 42.4 (genome). Type species : Desulforegula conservatrix Rees and Patel 2001, 1915 VP .
