Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reveal in detail the loss of work opportunities and economic damage experienced by sports coaches during the COVID-19. And based on the results, it was intended to present a task for building social safety net for sports coaches. For this study, 9 incumbent sports coaches who 3 or more years of teaching experience were chosen as research participants, and the study was conducted through the case study method. In-depth interviews and literature studies were used to collect research data. The results of this study are as follows. First, sports coaches suffered serious economic damage due to COVID-19. Many sports coaches did not work for at least six months a year, resulting in economic damage of more than tens of thousands of won. Second, as non-working periods are prolonged due to COVID-19, sports coaches have had to find other means of livelihood. They made up for their losses through part-time jobs at logistics center of online retail companies and delivery agencies, and bank loans, and earned income by renting private facilities for lessons. Third, disaster subsidies, freelance subsidies, subsidies by local governments, disaster subsidies for small business owners, and loans for small business owners were provided as government subsidies. However, the government subsidy did not help much because the damage was large while facilities closed over a year. Fourth, the weak social employment safety net of the sports coach job was revealed during the COVID-19 outbreak. Institutional action is needed to enable sports coaches to participate in employment insurance program. Fifth, during the COVID-19, sports coaches and workers in the sports industry suffered great damage, but did not receive much support from the government. One of the reasons is the lack of an agenda leader representing the damage and difficult realities of the sports industry. This study has significances in that it recorded vivid cases of sports coaches who suffered difficulties due to COVID-19 through field research.
