Abstract

The theory of polycode texts is a developing trend in text linguistics. Any polycode text is understood as the semantic unity of a verbal element (textual) and a non-verbal element (iconic). The relevance of this research is confirmed by the fact that polycode texts are an integral part of the technical academic texts and play an important role in training specialists for intelligent transportation systems. The objective of this work is to study the modal characteristics of polycode academic texts that are used in foreign language classes for engineering students. The main research methods are a content analysis and an observation. The empirical material is taken from the English textbook for engineers Oxford English for Careers: Technology, written by E.H. Glendinning. The study allowed us to conclude that one of the key characteristics of polycode technical academic texts is the visual modality of the iconic element.
