Abstract
The relevance of the study is determined by the imbalances in territorial development, which, in the context of modern challenges, lead to increased central-peripheral differences. This is typical for Russia, where, against the backdrop of a long-term demographic decline, there is a compression of the developed space and a polarization of the settlement system. The purpose of the paper is to identify the features and determine the prospects for the development of labor and employment in the Vologda region at the intraregional level. The subject of the research is social and labor relations that develop in the process of functioning of local labor markets. To achieve this purpose, methods of expert survey and multidimensional frequency distribution of features (data processing and visualization) were used. A distinctive feature of the paper is the use of an agglomeration approach to identifying the features of spatial development. The results of the study showed that as one moves away from regional centers, opportunities for professional fulfillment are noticeably reduced, and the problem of economic stagnation becomes more pronounced. According to the experts surveyed, residents of the periphery not only more often resort to the practice of commuting labor migration and fly-in/fly-out work, but also treat their place of residence worse and trust each other less. The scientific novelty of the research lies in expanding the understanding of the characteristics and prospects for the development of labor and employment in large cities and beyond.
