Abstract

This study is one of a series of writings not to explicate Socrates’ educational thought but to reflect my tacit knowing about education acting as a framework of understanding while I am reading Socrates. Although this kind of study is endless, its tentative results are as follows: Socrates as basanos tests whether his dialogue partner is living as parrhesiastes whose life harmonizes with his knowledge. After severe testing, Socrates almost always refutes his partner’s opinion, and then provokes eros as a passion for truth within his partner. When dialogue partner asks his help, Socrates claims to be ignorant midwife, and takes the role of ironist. Ironist is the mentor incarnate who guides the growth of his disciples. Socrates’ posture of basanos-ironist can be understood as a forerunner of new entanglement of living, knowing and education. My tacit educational thought as the target of this study is supposed to permeate these new interpretations on Socrates, but still resists emerging into the surface of awareness, and hides its specific contents. Although it is far from satisfactory, this study suggests various helpful questions in explicating my educational thought. My tacit horizon of education is expected to reveal itself by my following studies.
