Abstract

For the last two decades exclusive ecological requirements have been being specified for the reagents used in drilling muds. Vegetable-based lubricants are of principle interest. It is this particular group of reagents which is analyzed in this article, sometimes in comparison with other known lubricants. Study results of environmentally safe lubricants are presented including linseed, castor and tall oils, polydimethylsiloxanes, partially saponified sunflower oil, LUBE-167, FK-2000, FK-2000 Plus, FK 2000M, lubricant coolants, sulfurized rapeseed oil, Extra “C” and СРЖН «Б» (sulphonated fish oil “B”) being part of artificial and natural drilling muds of Western Siberia. Physicochemical properties of the reagents have been studied, as well as their influence on mud cake adhesiveness, clay disperse system foaming and drilling mud main technological characteristics. Advantages and drawbacks of the reagents mentioned have been defined both individually and in combination with other lubricants. Such agents as castor oil, FK-2000 Plus and СРЖН «Б» (sulphonated fish oil “B”) fit the necessary property package of Noyabrsky oil and gas region drilling muds. Recommendations on the use of reagents in oil fields are given. Environmentally safe lubricants are low-dissoluble and do not emulsify in clay drilling muds but with a definite pH level of drilling mud filtrate the agents become dissoluble in disperse system, however, in this case the drilling mud starts foaming while being stirred with a high-speed stirrer. Characteristics of the drilling mud, containing a lubricant, considerably depend on stirring intensity (slow-speed or highspeed stirrer). For each lubricant there are optimum levels of drilling mud pH filtrates, density and solution ratios as well as types of drilling mud preliminary chemical treatment when maximum mud-cake adhesiveness reduction occurs.
