Abstract

The purpose of this article is to study the process of the emergence of a social movement in defense of ancient monuments in the middle of the last century. Historical research method is used to show that the decision to restore the destroyed objects of histori-cal and cultural heritage was made already during the Great Patriotic War, as well as in the first post-war years, despite the catastrophic shortage of resources and funds in the country. During the period under study, the problem of preservation of monuments acquired a patriotic sound for the first time after the October Revolution. The study is based on archival documents. These materials allow us to reconstruct the picture in detail, giving a comprehensive idea of the activities of various commissions, sections and other structures whose competence included issues of resto-ration, preservation and restoration of ancient monu-ments. As a result, the author comes to the conclusion that the described processes laid the foundation for the subsequent institutionalization and organizational design of the movement for the protection of historical and cultural heritage objects in our country. The first proposals on the creation of the All-Russian society for the preservation of monuments came from the histori-cal and architectural community. This made it possible to further create powerful public structures in the field of preserving historical and cultural heritage and pre-serve many important objects of the past.
