Abstract

The subject of the paper is medicinal types of manna in the form of saccharine exudates of various types of trees, which appear in the writings of the Old Serbian medical codex known as the Hilandar Medical Codex No. 517 (mid-16th century). Medicinal types of manna primarily appear in the writings from the Canon of Medicine, the work of the famous Persian physician Avicenna (980–1037). These treatises were translated into Old Serbian through a Latin translation of the Canon, which was created at the end of the 12th century in Toledo, by Gerard of Cremona. Some types of manna are also present in the List of Simple Remedies of the HMC, which represents a translation of the Circa Instans, the famous pharmacopoeia of the Salerno school from the second half of the 12th century. The paper identifies and presents all types of manna found in the texts of the HMC, including their application within therapies for various diseases. Their properties and characteristics are indicated following the understanding of medicine at that time, alongside attention given to remedies that appear combined with manna.
