Abstract

By the material of nouns the article describes the basic means of stem composition used in the sphere of the modern English customs terminology. Analysing linguistic material the authors conclude on the necessity to consider all the criteria for differentiating a compound word from a word combination and argue that in this terminological system traditional means of word formation are used while many word combinations are at the stage of transition to a compound word. The productivity and frequency of stem composition in the sphere of customs terminology are identified.
