Abstract

This study aims to clarify the significance and necessity of the radian measure through a didactical analysis of the radian measure and to reveal the problems that arise when teaching, and then to search for improved teaching methods. First, it was conducted to analyze historical, mathematical and pedagogical points of view for multidisciplinary analysis of the radian concept. A major finding was that the unit conversion of angles, the unit omission of length ratio, and the unit construction to have real number representations of angles in degree are the key conceptual elements of the radian measure. The levels of the angle measure conceptualization are derived. Second, It was revealed the problems that arise when teaching through analyzing mathematics curriculum, and analyzing the survey of the students’ understanding of the radian measure. Third, I provide insight into how to improve the teaching of the radian measure and suggest concrete teaching and learning tasks. As a result of this research, it was revealed that the transition from trigonometric ratios to trigonometric function is not connected, and the teaching and learning problems of the radian measure is only superficial and mechanical learning of the radian measure. The didactical suggestions can contribute to establishing substantial measures and a theoretical perspectives.
