Abstract

The purpose of the article is to consider the features of the formation of the Second Empire and consolidation of power of Napoleon III through the assessment of British contemporaries in the middle of the 19th century. Depending on the objectives of the study, different methodologies can be used to study the Second Empire and Napoleon III. On the basis of the historical documents study, archives, letters and other sources, the author considers how Napoleon III and the Second Empire influenced France and the world histo-ry. Some ecological problems of perception of images of the Second Empire in British society in the first ten years of the reign of Emperor Napoleon III are revealed. On the basis of English periodicals and domestic and English-language literature studies, the author makes an attempt to construct images of the Bonapartist regime and the personality of Napoleon himself as a politician in the perception of a medieval Englishman. The main emphasis is on the analysis of the internal policy of Napoleon III.
