Abstract
The path of formation and development of mentoring from the first documented mention to the current situation is considered. The evolution from previous forms – apprenticeship, patronage – is described. Previously, researchers studied mentoring in specific area of human activity – among teachers, at industrial enterprises, in the process of teaching schoolchildren or students. After analyzing the sources, a brief global and domestic history of mentoring was created, which touched upon many areas of human activity. Particular attention is paid to mentoring in Russia, the stages of its development and transformation from an applied tool into an object of scientific research are described. Consideration of mentoring in several spheres of human activity at once made it possible to trace that, regardless of the scope of application, mentoring developed according to similar laws. It is emphasized that after the decline in the 1990s, mentoring is again developing, popularizing and gaining importance.
