Abstract

This paper was written with the purpose to explain the use and spread of Hunminjeongeum(henceforth, Hangeul) during the Joseon dynasty. In particular, the main aim is to explain the practical use of Hangeul and its diffusion process. Hangeul was invented by King Sejong with the purpose of enlightenment, and it was especially welcomed by women. Hangeul then spread very quickly in Seoul, but it took much longer to reach local areas. The spread of Hangeul was driven by Hangeul letters(eongan), Hangeul novels, and the Hangeul Bible. Accordingly, Hangeul exerted a strong influence from the 17th to the first half of the 20th century. This work is expected to arouse various interest and discussion about Hangeul.
