Abstract

In order to help the hanbok industry moving forward in advancement, this study analyzed the overall status and prospects of the hanbok industry in the past decade and provided primary data to understand the trend of the hanbok industry. In addition, this study examined the macro policy of the Japanese traditional craft industry, which is experiencing a reduction in the traditional craft industry, including the Kimono industry, and suggest ways to develop the hanbok industry. The number of hanbok manufacturers and the number of employees have been continuously decreasing. The decrease is due to the reduction of the opportunity for consumers to wear traditional hanbok, the growth of the rental industry, and the cheap manufacturing cost overseas. The number of Hanbok retailers and the number of employees showed a flat or insignificant decrease overall. The number of hanbok retail businesses did not decrease significantly. Although the number of traditional custom retail stores decreased, the number of retail businesses and employees has maintained because of the increase of various hanbok rental stores and online retail stores. The total sales volume of hanbok retailers has declined, and labor, sales, management, and operating costs have increased. Hence, the hanbok industry has the challenge to operations management because of cash flow. The following suggestions are made to promote the hanbok industry, referring to the traditional Japanese craft industry: First, it is necessary to create a culture of wearing hanbok for young consumers. Second, it is urgent to establish a structured support system at the government level. Third, regular educational support for skilled hanbok manufacturing technicians and establishing an educational system for young technicians are needed. Fourth, it is necessary to promote projects to revitalize the local economy by utilizing local resources with genuine technologies related to Hanbok in Korea. Therefore, supporting industry promotion policies that can continuously and systematically develop the hanbok industry should be implemented by enacting laws related to the hanbok culture industry.
