Abstract

The purpose of the article is to consider the features of the Soviet collecting in the 1920s -1930s. The October Revolution of 1917 led to a radical breakdown of social relations, which was reflected in the field of leisure as well. The article offers a historical reconstruction of the view formed in the 1920s and 1930s on collecting as a form of leisure in Soviet society. The debates about the semantic content of the concept of "Soviet collecting" led to a new understanding of collecting. It was opposed to bourgeois collecting, which was elitist in nature and possessive in its foundation. As a result, the authors conclude that the new image of the Soviet collecting became a combination of four factors: the maximum variety of collectibles (democracy as opposed to elitism); scientific, based on the Neo-Kantian Philosophy; educational, propaganda orientation; a new ethics of solidarity (openness) as opposed to greediness and possessiveness.
