Abstract

Abstract. Infrared (IR) detectors play now an increasing role in different areas of human activity (e.g., in environmental surveillance, fire safety control, communications, space surveillance of the Earth, medical diagnostics, security and military applications, tracking and targeting, etc.). Discussed in the paper are issues associated with the development and exploitation of up to date basic IR radiation detectors and large-size (matrix) focal plane arrays (FPAs). Progress in research and development for applications IR FPAs has rendered significant influence on infrared technologies. Comparison of FPA detector performance characteristics is given with account of operational conditions and performance limits.
