Abstract

The article is devoted to the consideration of the place and role of the ekphrasis “The Holy Family” in F. M. Dostoevsky’s “Notes from Underground” (1864). During the first meeting with Lisa, Podpolniy spontaneously creates a picture of family life, which is based on an idyllic and picturesque tradition. With the ecphrasis “The Holy Family”, the central value orientation enters the history of the heroes. For Podpolniy, ecphrasis at first becomes a means of manipulating the feelings of the prostitute Lisa. However, having come into contact with the world of the sacred, the hero discovers a moral principle in himself, which he is not able to accept. The image of the Holy Family for the heroine is an ideal model that gives her hope to get out of the brothel. This image is included in the context of F. M. Dostoevsky’s reflection on the phenomenon of man in the 19th century.
