Abstract

The article is devoted to the history of religious and educational activities of the regional departments of the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society in pre-revolutionary Russian Empire. Its purpose is to clarify the role and place of the Palestinian readings in the peasant culture of the early 20th century. The author demonstrates the large-scale educational effect of the readings and their positive impact on the cultural environment of the Russian countryside shows the positive impact of the initiatives of the Palestinian so-ciety in strengthening the Orthodox identity of the peasantry in the context of social modernization. The work concludes that the Palestinian readings, giving rural residents rich information about the Bible region and stimulating pilgrimage to Jerusalem, turned out to be a serious factor in strengthening the spiritual ties between Russia and the Holy Land.
