Abstract

The paper aims to identify the characteristic strategies and tactics and their functions, as well as lexical and syntactic means that represent the opposition “them – us” in the inaugural speech of the 77th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Scientific novelty of the study lies in describing linguistic means of actualising the opposition “them – us” on the basis of the material of B. Johnson’s political discourse during the Brexit period in Great Britain. As a result of the study, the authors have identified reference of the opposition “them – us”, described various means of their naming, determined patterns in Boris Johnson’s choice of strategies and tactics, which are accounted for by the nature of the political relations between the opposition members.
