Abstract
The article deals with the problems of formation and development of library science in Altai at the beginning of the XX century and the role of educated people that have had a great influence on this process. Among many the appreciable contribution to cultural development of the region was brought by Poles, who arrived to Altai for various reasons. Their contribution was put in the active participation in a variety of cultural, educational, research community, in initiation of opening public libraries, reading rooms, people’s homes, in the organization of performances, readings, concerts, and in the formation of the museums, libraries, books and artifacts from private collections.
