Abstract

The article analyses the attitude of rural communities of a “rebellious” region to rebellious movement of Tambov peasants. The factors determining the local residents’ position in the armed struggle with the powers are revealed. Relying on archival materials, the authors identify the methods the rebels used to influence the non-combatants and describe the measures taken by the party leadership and the province military command to suppress the peasant uprising. The conclusion is made that the opposing parties were guided by the principle of collective responsibility and other traditional principles of communal self-government.
