Abstract

The main purpose of the article is to analyze the attempts of the provincial Orthodox press to participate in the harmonization of socio-political relations during the First Russian Revolution of 1905–1907. The author re-veals the nature of the activities of such publication as the journal's «Orel diocesan statements» and its influence on the social situation of that time. The authors analyze the topics of the journal's publi-cations, the structure of its editors and authors. The participation of the church in the civil structure of the society is show, as well as the attempts to direct the faithful (the people) into the course of rec-onciliation. Various points of view of the authors of the journal are presented in the article, including the church leaders, who used the Orthodox press as a platform for their beliefs promotion. In con-clusion, the authors trace the fate of the journalists and the authors of the magazine, as well as the one of church activists who published their articles there. It is concluded that the magazine paid clearly excessive attention to politics, subjecting socialism to harsh criticism. The ideas of social reconstruction were eventually declared to be heresy and sectarianism and thus were removed out of the framework of the public dialogue.
