Abstract

Objectives In this study, we verified the moderating effect of social activity participation in the relationship between digital competency according to the education and occupation of the elderly. Methods For this purpose, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0 on 9,920 people aged 65 or older who participated in the 2020 Survey on the Status of the Elderly, excluding proxy respondents. Results The results of the study showed that the respondents' digital capabilities were very low, and the level of digital capabilities among the elderly showed very large differences. Digital competency showed the highest positive correlation with education, and this was found to be statistically significant. Participation in social activities showed a high positive correlation with digital capabilities, and also showed a significant positive correlation with education, health status, and residence. It was confirmed that participation in social activities has a significant moderating effect in the relationship with digital competencies according to education and occupation. Conclusions Based on the results of this study, in order to strengthen the digital capabilities of the elderly, it is necessary to activate various customized education programs, expand cooperative relationships and support for executing agencies between government, private and non-profit organizations, establish a senior-friendly digital environment, train a visiting digital education volunteer group, and bridge the digital information gap. We suggest that it is necessary to establish policies and improve awareness of the elderly.
