Abstract
The Old Rus text, commonly addressed as the Word for the Renewal of the Desyatinnaya Church (and called in the text itself the Martyrdom of Saint Martyr Bishop Clement), is not extant in any full version and in any medieval manuscript, but only in an incomplete 19th-century copy and in the 1850 edition of its conclusive part. However, the text attracts scholarly attention, including an excellent 2013 book by Alexander V. Nazarenko. In the present paper, the author shows that the text of the Word that we possess consists in fact of two independent works: the Martyrdom of St Clement (in its second, ‘Rus’, translation) and the extended version of the Miracle of St Clement of the Boy (the short version of this Miracle is well-known in 14th–17th-century manuscripts). Thus, in further studies of the Word, one should deal not with all the text commonly so designated, but only with its second part (which results if we exclude the text of the Martyrdom, attached to it artificially).
