Abstract

The paper is dedicated to the cases of writing with gold by Rus 11th to 14th-century scribes of books and charters, and the technique of writing with gold. The earliest case of such writing is examined, the Mstislav charter (c. 1130), as well as headings, initials and their elements, and inscriptions in miniatures of Old Rus parchment manuscripts. The question of writing with gold and ink on toned parchment is raised. The Rus material is compared to that from Western Europe and Byzantium. Conclusions are made concerning the specific features of using gold when writing books and charters in the earliest period of Slavonic Cyrillic writing.
