Abstract

Тhis paper looks at the application of the Internet in the TEFL in the primary school and presents a model for using the Internet in the English classroom. Attention is paid to modern digital technologies, which are becoming an invariable part of Bulgarian education and play an increasingly important part in the education of primary school learners. Until recently primary school age was considered a „low tech“ segment of a child’s life and today it is the beginning of their digital literacy. The paper also examines the role of the Internet in TEFL both as providing different types of visualization and teaching resources, and as providing enhanced learning experiences. While the first is the modern version of the blackboard and chalk, the second is an important methodological innovation that makes possible greater individualization in TEFL according to the needs of the individual learner, more social interaction through linking students together and reflection on the nature of language as an always changing system of communication. A model for using the Internet in the primary school English classroom is presented along with game-like activities tailored to the age and language level of the primary school learners. The paper contains conclusions about the role of adults for finding a balance between the benefit of exposure to technology and becoming over-saturated with access to it. The Internet, as a source of digital resources and enhanced learning experiences for primary school learners cannot replace the teacher, nor can it replace classroom teaching.
