Abstract

The article explores the place and role of volunteers in social work in the probation system. The author emphasizes that volunteers play an important role in improving the effectiveness of programs for the re-socialization and reintegration of probation clients. The article reveals that cooperation between professional probation workers and volunteers contributes to the optimization of resources, as well as provides better rehabilitation of offenders. In the article, the author studies the experience of countries such as Sweden and Japan. In these countries, volunteers are actively involved in providing social work and probation services. It was also revealed that the number of volunteers in Japan is ten times higher than the number of qualified workers. Volunteers provide social work services on an equal basis with professional workers. Moreover, volunteers help to change the attitude of society towards probation clients.
