Abstract

Under the contemporary conditions of the Ukraine’s independence assertion the Ukrainians’ malformed concept of patriotism is noticeable, and it brings the issue of national identity to the foreground. Despite the considerable amount of academic works dedicated to analysis of various aspects of the issue of national identity development, the problem of the development of national identity of primary school students and the educator’s role in the process remains underresearched. The aim of the article consists in the theoretical objectivation of the significance of primary school teacher’s ethnopedagogical competence as an influence on the development of national identity of primary school students. It has been identified through subject to object essence of national identity, sources and conditions of its establishment and development that self-awareness, innermost feelings of the individual, and social institutions that provide the space for the processes of the person’s self-identification according to various attributes including the national and cultural, educational establishments in particular, play an important role in this process. It has been established that the person’s national identity begins its development when the child is 6 to 7 years old, at the time the figure of the educator, who is to foster the emergence of each student’s need and aspiration for the national self-identification, becomes significant in the educational process. The ethnopedagogical competence ensures the pedagogical professionalism enhancement, fosters effective organization of national cultural educational environment that defines the vector of the further cultural development of primary school students cultural, the establishment of their national mindset.It has been proven, that the primary school teacher with the established ethnopedagogical competency is capable to optimize the process of creation of national identity of primary school students by means of foregrounding of the national culture and consideration for ethnical characteristic features of the children in the educational process, introduction of the pedagogical traditions of the national school into the educational practice, their adaptation to the contemporary challenges.
