Abstract

Independence is seen as an integrative quality of the personality and its development from an early childhood is a priority of modern education. For the realization of this goal, the pedagogical model of Dr Maria Montessori, built on the principles of her emblematic phrase: „Help me to do it ALL BY MYSELF!“, can be applied at an early age. This phrase contains the main idea of the method – to stimulate the child towards self-development. The article examines the different aspects of independence in the context of the Montessori philosophy and derives basic criteria for tracking the level of its manifestations in elementary school students through the main tool of the Montessori teacher – the observation.
