Abstract

The article presents the results of a study to assess the impact of various types of bedding material on the productive qualities of broiler chickens and the occurrence of pododermatitis of paw pads in them. It was found that the bedding material from straw was in many respects inferior in quality to the bedding material from sawdust. The straw was more humid, polluted, and marked «cakes» were formed on it, which increased the microbial contamination of the poultry house's air space. The average live weight of chickens of the experimental group (straw) was 2470,6 g, in the control group (sawdust) – 2588,2 g, that is 117,6 g higher than the experimental group (P <0,05), the average daily increase in live weight was 62,3 g and 66,4 g, the survival of broilers 96,7 % and 95,3 %, respectively. Feed costs in the control group were lower by 1,18 % compared to the experimental group. There were more pododermatitis and various diseases of the paw pads on the straw litter (by 20,4–38,9 %).
