Abstract

The article traces the evolution of the internal monologue as a means of revealing the depths of the spiritual life of the protagonist in Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment. The novelty of the work lies in the fact that the role of the internal monologue is explored depending on the Christian views of the novelist. It is noted that the evolution of the internal monologue is due to a change in the moral and psychological state of the hero and the surrounding reality. However, the novelist believed that a person is determined not only by character, current life circumstances, but also by free will, which can destroy their logic, the laws of psychology and become a resurrection into a new life. The internal monologue becomes the leading means of artistic and psychological analysis in the novel, when the hero chooses self-will, empties his heart and plunges into the element of rationality. Thus, the hero becomes a person of the «environment» and lends himself to a partial psychological explanation.
