The present work investigates the anodic formation of a self- organized high-aspect-ratio zirconia nanotube layer on Zr. Under specific electrochemical conditions anodization of Zr in (NH4)2SO4/NH4F electrolyte results in arrays of individual nanotubes with a diameter of 50 nm and a length of 17 μm - the aspect ratio is estimated as more than 300. The tube walls where extremely straight and smooth - this morphology is significantly different from a nanotubular zirconia shapes formed in acidic electrolytes. SAD pattern reveals that the nanotubes have a crystalline structure already after anodization, that is, without any further annealing. The nanotube growth features are similar to that of HfO2 nanotubes, but is different from that of TiO2.
