Analysis of intercore crosstalk of WDM channels around zero-dispersion wavelength in homogeneous multicore fibers

We present a numerical analysis of the average intercore crosstalk (IC-XT) of wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) optical channels in a homogeneous two-core fiber system. This analysis is performed considering cores with zero-dispersion wavelengths at 1550 nm. In the analysis, we consider 11 WDM channels spaced 100 GHz apart transmitted in three different schemes, one centered at 1510 nm with negative dispersion D = − 3.5 ps / nm · km, one centered at 1550 nm with D = 0, and one centered at 1590 nm with D = + 3.5 ps / nm · km. This selection allows for the observation of how the IC-XT of WDM channels is modified using positive, zero, and negative dispersion parameters. To analyze more realistic scenarios of IC-XT in multicore fibers, we considered random bending and twisting perturbations along the fiber. In addition, we considered fiber nonlinearities such as four-wave mixing (FWM) among WDM channels. The results show that FWM produces a power transfer among the transmitted WDM channels that depends on the dispersion parameter D at core 1, and this effect is transferred to the average crosstalk of the WDM channels at core 2. Therefore, the average IC-XT of WDM channels can be modified in a controlled way by selecting an adequate dispersion parameter D in combination with FWM nonlinearity. These results provide valuable information for understanding the wavelength dependence of the average IC-XT of homogeneous multichannel MCF systems working around a zero-dispersion wavelength.

Exploiting dispersion of higher-order-modes using M-type fiber for application in mid-infrared supercontinuum generation

M-type fibers have the exceptional property that the higher-order LP0n modes are core-confined and easily excited, while the LP01 and other modes are confined to a high-index ring surrounding the core, so they are not easily excited. This has profound consequences for mid-infrared supercontinuum sources, where the high zero-dispersion wavelength of chalcogenide and ZBLAN fibers means that exotic pump sources have so far been necessary. We show here that in chalcogenide and ZBLAN M-type fibers the lower ZDW of the core-confined higher-order LP02 mode can be in the range of 2 to 3 µm (around 1.55 µm), while the fiber still has a large core diameter and thus supports high average power. This will allow established pump laser technology to be used in future high-power mid-infrared supercontinuum sources.

Tunable mid-infrared Raman soliton generation from 1.96 to 2.82 μm in an all-solid fluorotellurite fiber

We demonstrate tunable mid-infrared (MIR) Raman soliton generation in an all-solid fluorotellurite fiber pumped by a 1960 nm femtosecond fiber laser. All-solid fluorotellurite fibers are fabricated by using a rod-in-tube method. The core and cladding materials are TeO2-BaF2-Y2O3 (TBY) and AlF3-based glasses. Since the refractive index of AlF3-based glass is much lower than that of TBY glass, the zero-dispersion wavelength of all-solid fluorotellurite fiber can be tuned in a wide range by simply varying the core diameter of the fiber. By using a 0.5 m long all-solid fluorotellurite fiber with a core diameter of ∼ 2.7 μm as the nonlinear medium and a 1960 nm femtosecond fiber laser as the pump source, tunable MIR Raman soliton generation from 1.96 to 2.82 μm is obtained via soliton self-frequency shift by increasing the pump power. For the soliton laser source operating at 2.82 μm, the obtained optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is about 18% and the calculated pulse width is about 93 fs. Our results show that all-solid fluorotellurite fibers are promising nonlinear media for constructing tunable MIR ultrafast laser sources.

Shift of zero-dispersion wavelength in bent optical fibers.

The understanding of how bending modifies the dispersion of optical fibers, in particular, the zero-dispersion wavelength (λ0), is essential in the development of compact nonlinear optical devices such as parametric amplifiers, wavelength converters, soliton lasers and frequency comb generators. Typically, substantial variations in the parametric gain and/or conversion efficiency are significant for changes in λ0 of ~0.1 nm, which occur for variations on the bending radius (Rb) of 1 cm or less. Measuring λ0 as a function of bending radius (Rb) is challenging, as it requires detecting changes < 0.1 nm and in short fibers. By using a method based on four-wave mixing (FWM) generated by an incoherent-pump with relatively broad spectrum and a weak laser, we report measurements of λ0 as a function of Rb in a dispersion-shifted fiber with <0.1 nm accuracy on λ0. This method is sensitive enough to measure small variations in λ0 of ~0.04 nm in very short fibers (~20 m). We observe that λ0 increases by 12 nm when Rb is decreased from 10 cm to 1 cm, and a change of 1 nm is obtained for Rb = 3 cm. We also present numerical simulations of the bent fiber that are in good agreement with our measurements, and help us to explain the observations and to predict how high-order dispersion is modified with bending. This study can provide insights for dispersion engineering, in which bending could be used as a tuning, equalization, or tailoring mechanism for λ0, which can be used in the development of compact nonlinear optical devices based on fibers or other bent-waveguide structures.

Novel large negative dispersion and tunable zero dispersion wavelength of photonic crystal fiber

The article describes a novel doped CS2 core photonic crystal fiber with high negative chromatic dispersion. The proposed design is simulated through a full-vector finite element method and anisotropic perfectly matched layers. The numerical results show that we can achieve a negative dispersion coefficient of −5600 ps/(nm km) almost at the wavelength of 1.55 μm by carefully adjusting the proposed PCF structure parameters. The proposed PCF may have great potential applications in dispersion compensating, optical parametric amplification, and optical fiber communication.

Visible continuum pulses based on enhanced dispersive wave generation for endogenous fluorescence imaging.

In this study, we demonstrate endogenous fluorescence imaging using visible continuum pulses based on 100-fs Ti:sapphire oscillator and a nonlinear photonic crystal fiber. Broadband (500-700 nm) and high-power (150 mW) continuum pulses are generated through enhanced dispersive wave generation by pumping femtosecond pulses at the anomalous dispersion region near zero-dispersion wavelength of high-nonlinear photonic crystal fibers. We also minimize the continuum pulse width by determining the proper fiber length. The visible-wavelength two-photon microscopy produces NADH and tryptophan images of mice tissues simultaneously. Our 500-700 nm continuum pulses support extending nonlinear microscopy to visible wavelength range that is inaccessible to 100-fs Ti:sapphire oscillators and other applications requiring visible laser pulses.

Group Delay measurements of ultrabroadband pulses generated in highly nonlinear fibers

Ultra broadband supercontinuum pulses are commonly used as a source of different wavelengths from a wide spectral bandwidth or as a source of very short pulses. However the processes responsible for wide spectral broadening are still under investigation. In this paper we examine the temporal and spectral characteristics of the pulses broadened upon propagation in the highly nonlinear photonics crystal fibers with different dispersion profiles. Wavelength conversion through soliton self-frequency shift in tellurite microstructured fiber with picosecond pump pulse

Wavelength conversion to the wavelength range that is not covered by commercially available lasers could be accomplished through the soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) effect. In this study, the phenomenon of SSFS pumped by a picosecond-order pulse in a tellurite microstructured fiber is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The balance between the dispersion and the nonlinearity achieved by a 1958 nm pump laser induces a distinct SSFS effect. Attributed to the large spectral distance between the pump pulse and the fiber zero-dispersion wavelength, the SSFS is not cancelled due to energy shedding from the soliton to the dispersive wave. Details about the physical mechanisms behind this phenomenon and the variations of the wavelength shift, the conversion efficiency are revealed based on numerical simulations. Owing to the large soliton number N, the pulse width of the first split fundamental soliton is approximately 40 fs, producing a pulse compression factor of ∼38, much higher than that pumped by a femtosecond pulse. Experiments were also conducted to confirm the validity of the simulation results. By varying the pump power, a continuous soliton shift from 1990 nm to 2264 nm was generated. The generation of SSFS in tellurite microstructured fibers with picosecond pump pulse can provide a new approach for wavelength conversion in the mid-infrared range and could be useful in medical and some other areas.

Emission of multiple dispersive waves from a single Raman-shifting soliton in an axially-varying optical fiber.

We provide the experimental demonstration of the generation of multiple dispersive waves from a single soliton propagating in the vicinity of the first zero-dispersion wavelength of an axially-varying optical fiber. The fiber is designed such that the Raman-shifting soliton successively hits three times the longitudinally evolving zero-dispersion wavelength, which results in the emission of three distinct dispersive waves at different fiber lengths. These results illustrate how suitably controlled axially-varying fibers allow to tailor the soliton dynamics in a very accurate way.

Spatio-Temporal Self-Focusing in Femtosecond Pulse Transmission Through Multimode Optical Fibers

We numerically investigate ultra-short pulse propagation in multimode optical fibers with launch peak powers approaching the critical power for self-focusing using a generalized multimode nonlinear Schrödinger equation approach. Nonlinear spatial and temporal effects combined with fiber dispersion govern pulse compression in space and time which can result in damage-inducing intensity levels. Here we identify pulse parameters for which damage is avoided and high-power delivery through optical fiber is possible near the fiber zero-dispersion wavelength.

Efficient Technique to Control the Zero-Dispersion Wavelength of a Microstructured Optical Fiber

An efficient technique to control the zero-dispersion wavelength of a microstructured optical fiber is proposed and numerically demonstrated in this article. This technique is based on the variation of the linear refractive index and the thickness of a thin film covering the microstructured optical fiber holes' inner surfaces. A powerful and accurate code based on a full-vector finite-element method formulation in conjunction with perfectly matched layers was used. A maximum of 570-nm zero-dispersion wavelength displacement is demonstrated. This thin film can be included after the microstructured optical fiber has been fabricated, as that means the zero dispersion of such fiber can be tailored as needed.

Generation of optical waveforms in 1.3-μm SOA-based fiber lasers

Passive optical waveform generation is obtained in fiber lasers using a 1.3-μm semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) as the gain medium. Various waveforms, including square wave, staircase wave, triangular wave, pulse, and dark pulse are generated in SOA-based fiber lasers by adjusting intracavity polarization controllers. The passive waveform generation might be attributed to the SOA gain dynamics and the enhanced nonlinear interaction at the 1.3-μm zero dispersion wavelength of traditional single-mode fiber (SMF), as well as the interference effect between the two sub-cavities of fiber laser. With figure-8 cavity configuration, 1250th-order harmonic pulses have been successfully demonstrated. We have also obtained a free-running SOA-based fiber laser with 3-dB spectral width of 16 nm, and the center wavelength can be tuned over 45 nm range.

Measurement of nonlinear coefficient of a highly nonlinear fiber based on peak four-wave mixing signal generation conditions

We introduce a new measurement method of the nonlinear coefficient (NC) of a highly nonlinear fiber based on a four-wave mixing (FWM) technique. The NC along with the fiber's zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDW) was determined from the precise measurement of the pump power dependent optimum pump frequency for peak FWM signal generation conditions. The measurement errors of the NC and ZDW values determined with this method were less than 4.6% and 0.051 nm, respectively.

Dynamics of Raman soliton during supercontinuum generation near the zero-dispersion wavelength of optical fibers

We observe unique dynamics of Raman soliton during supercontinuum process when an input pulse experiences initially normal group-velocity dispersion with a negative dispersion slope. In this situation, the blue components of the spectrum form a Raman soliton that moves faster than the input pulse and eventually decelerates because of Raman-induced frequency downshifting. In the time domain, the soliton trajectory bends and becomes vertical when the Raman shift ceases to occur as the spectrum of Raman soliton approaches the zero dispersion point. Parts of the red components of the pulse spectrum are captured by the Raman soliton through cross-phase modulation and they travel with it. The influence of soliton order, input chirp and dispersion slope on the dynamics of Raman soliton is discussed thoroughly.

Simple Method for Measuring the Zero-Dispersion Wavelength in Optical Fibers

We propose a very simple method for measuring the zero-dispersion wavelength of an optical fiber as well as the ratio between the third- and fourth-order dispersion terms. The method is based on the four-wave mixing process when pumping the fiber in the normal dispersion region, and only requires the measurement of two spectra. We provide an experimental demonstration of the method in a photonic crystal fiber and we show that the measured zero-dispersion wavelength is in good agreement with a low-coherence interferometry measurement.

Nonlinear interaction between two different photonic bandgaps of a hybrid photonic crystal fiber

Nonlinear interaction between spectral components in two different photonic bandgaps is experimentally demonstrated by launching femtosecond pulses near a zero-dispersion wavelength of a hybrid photonic crystal fiber, which guides by a combination of total internal reflection and bandgap effects. It is demonstrated that the initial pulse becomes spectrally broadened, and narrowband resonant radiation is generated in a different bandgap from the one responsible for guiding at the pump wavelength. The spectral intensity of the resonant radiation peaks at 2.7 dB below that of the broadened pulse in the pump-guiding bandgap.

High-conversion-efficiency widely-tunable all-fiber optical parametric oscillator

A high-conversion-efficiency widely-tunable all-fiber optical parametric oscillator is described. It is based on modulation instability in the normal dispersion regime near the fiber's zero-dispersion wavelength. A 40 m long dispersion-shifted fiber is used in a synchronously pumped ring cavity. We demonstrate continuous sideband tuning from 1300 to 1500 nm and 1600 to 1860 nm by tuning the pump wavelength between 1532 and 1556 nm. Internal conversion efficiencies of up to 40% are achieved.

Broadband parametric amplification in photonic crystal fibers with two zero-dispersion wavelengths

In this paper, the fourfold parametric enhancement over Raman gain of the total optical fiber-amplifier gain is analyzed. Such fiber-amplifier gain may be obtained with a relatively flat profile over a bandwidth in excess of 70 nm by using a microstructure or photonic crystal fiber with two zero-dispersion wavelengths. Optimal fiber-amplifier gain enhancement occurs whenever the pump wavelength is slightly shorter than the second zero-dispersion wavelength of a microstructure optical fiber.

HIGHLY ACCURATE WAVELENGTH SCANNED FOUR-WAVE MIXING EXPERIMENT IN AN OPTICAL FIBER AND DEMONSTRATION OF RETRIEVAL OF ITS LINEAR AND NONLINEAR OPTICAL PARAMETERS

Accurate wavelength scanned four-wave mixing (FWM) measurement results in an optical fiber are presented with two tunable laser sources near the dispersion-zero wavelength of the fiber. By comparing the measured FWM data with a simple analytic expression, we have demonstrated that important linear and nonlinear optical properties such as zero-dispersion wavelength, dispersion slope and nonlinear refractive index of the sample fiber. Highly accurate and repeatable measurement results for a sample fiber are presented. Temperature-dependent change in the chromatic dispersion of a fiber is also investigated.

Detailed numerical analysis of a four-wave mixing in dispersion-shifted fiber based all-optical wavelength converter of 10 Gb/s single sideband optical signal

We analyze the Q factor and the conversion efficiency of all-optical wavelength converter based on four-wave mixing in dispersion-shifted fibers at 10 Gb/s employing single sideband signal. We find that the Q factor of the converted signal is always higher for upper-single sideband signal with upward conversion in wavelength and for lower-single sideband signal with downward conversion. The four-wave mixing efficiency is higher when the pump wavelength is deviated positively relative to the fiber zero-dispersion wavelength. The used of low dispersion slope allows broad bandwidth and broad dynamic range of pump wavelength. From this study we depict the working characteristics of an all-optical wavelength converter for upper and lower single side band signals, providing guidelines to the utilization of these very promising technologies in the implementation of the future high bit rate all-optical networks.
