Youth employability and the problem of unemployment in Nigeria; an evaluation of the graduate internship scheme (GIS) in Nigeria

One of the biggest problems Nigeria faces in recent times is the high level of youth unemployment. To address this, the Nigerian federal government framed and implemented the Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS) in 2012. The main objective of the GIS programme is to drive youth unemployment down by providing employability skills, work experience and opportunity to create business through internship placement, career development and entrepreneurship skills training. However, after a decade of the GIS programme, the problem of youth unemployment in Nigeria remains high. Armed with this observation, this study evaluated the outcome of the GIS programme to uncover the performance of the programme in terms of serving its objectives. Analysis of the Impact of Insecurity on Youth Unemployment (1990-2020)

Using the ordinary least square estimation technique (OLS), this research examines the impact of insecurity on youth unemployment in Nigeria between 1990 and 2020. The study focuses on the relationship between the dependent variable, unemployment (UNE), and two independent variables, the National Terrorism Index (NTI) and Crime Rate (CR). The results reveal that NTI has a positive and statistically significant effect on UNE. Specifically, a unit increase in NTI leads to a 0.000827 rise in unemployment. Additionally, Nigerian CR demonstrates a significant and positive influence on UNE, with an increase in CR resulting in a 0.005653 increase in unemployment. Given that heightened insecurity directly contributes to unemployment, the study proposes several policy recommendations. Firstly, the government should consider reducing interest rates in commercial banks to enhance the availability of loans for small business owners, enabling them to hire more employees. Furthermore, addressing corruption in both public and private sectors, combating kidnappings, and establishing additional skill acquisition centers are crucial measures to tackle the issue of insecurity and promote employment opportunities.

Practicable Vocational and Entrepreneurial Skills Acquisition for job Creation and Poverty Alleviation Among Nigerian Youths

Purpose: This study examined the concepts of poverty, youth unemployment and vocational and entrepreneurial skills acquisition. It also identified the various factors responsible for poverty and youth unemployment in Nigeria. It highlighted the rationale for Nigerian youths to acquire vocational and entrepreneurial skills for self-reliance, income generation, wealth creation and employment generation for others. Theoretical Framework: The aim of vocational and entrepreneurial skills acquisition is to make it practicable in order to drive and deliver the purpose of job creation and poverty alleviation among Nigerian youths. Making it more practicable achieves the driving force to creating economic values and creative business engagements by Nigerians. The focus also provides job opportunities for the teeming Nigerian youths, channels their future to productive activities and turn to make poverty and unemployment to be things of the past if the practicability is achieved through entrepreneurial activities. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study adopted the mode of conducting literature review and conceptualization of the variables and x-rayed the reasons for poverty and unemployment and deepen how the social problems can be identified and reduced to the barest minimum in Nigeria. Findings: Our findings revealed there is serious poverty and unemployment in Nigeria. It as well suggest that it is of valuable and useful direction to promote practicable skills acquisition among Nigerian youths and that the curricula of Nigerian educational institutions should be more pragmatic and have built-in-job training programmes that would enable students to acquire relevant practicable vocational and entrepreneurial skills required for self-employment, job and wealth creation and poverty alleviation. While all stakeholders should be actively involved in the funding of vocational and entrepreneurship education. Research, Practical & Social implications: This study in its focus contributes to a better understanding of the important role being played by entrepreneurial skills acquisition in achieving practicable vocational skills and to develop entrepreneurial attitudes of Nigerian youths that will form the economic growth of the country through their engagements and make them employers of labour through their acquired practicable vocational skills acquisition to better the society. This study also contributes to a better understanding of the causes of the menace which therefore proffers solution to tackling the problem of poverty among Nigerian youths through the provision of a viable, robust, comprehensive and practical-oriented vocational and entrepreneurship education. It also expressed how the collective responsibility of all prominent Nigerians could be keyed-into supporting entrepreneurship programmes in Nigeria in the area of funding of vocational and entrepreneurship education in Nigeria which both Government at Federal, State and Local Government levels and the Non-Govermental Organisations (NGOs). Originality/value: The added value of this study provides insights on how vocational entrepreneurial skills acquisition programmes can be practicable effective in a way to structure the future of Nigerian youths and citizens for productive economic activities. It is as well sought how poverty and unemployment can be reduced and make citizens focus for economic growth and self-dependence businesses.

The challenge of youth unemployment in Nigeria

AbstractNigeria is home to a significant and growing “youth” population, over a third of it below 24 years of age. The demographic potential for productivity and growth this group represents occurs alongside large-scale unemployment among young people of working age. The “unemployment crisis” has deep historical roots and exists within a wider context of poor governance, insecurity, conflict, and poverty. Policy norms and practices to address youth unemployment in Nigeria largely centre on skill development and job creation, with complementary schemes selectively targeted to specific groups of vulnerable and poor individuals. Measures are typically ad hoc, detached from a coherent programme of sustainable reform. Pre-existing structural factors and capacity constraints also shape the effectiveness of these programmes. While a productivist focus within current policy is potentially empowering in giving young Nigerians “worker” status, it also detracts from attending to deep-rooted structural problems seen to affect young people in disproportionate ways. Securing meaningful choices and lives for Nigerian youth requires reframing youth unemployment beyond labour markets alone, and embedded in ideas of equality and collective action.

Advocacy of AI skills acquisition a panacea for youth unemployment in South-South Nigeria

Advocating AI Skills Acquisition as a Solution for Youth Unemployment in Nigeria’s South-South Region” investigates the feasibility of incorporating AI skills education to address the pressing issue of youth unemployment. This study explores youth awareness, interest, and willingness to engage in AI skill acquisition using a mixed-methods approach that includes surveys with unique features such as AI mentor circles and micro-credential programs. The findings show a strong interest in AI education, notably through micro-credential courses and AI mentorship networks. Youth Unemployment and Security Challenges in Anambra State, Nigeria

With special emphasis on the Ogbaru local government area of Anambra state, the study examined issues with youth unemployment and security in Nigeria. In particular, the research looked at how youth unemployment in Ogbaru Local Government Area has impacted poverty and how much it has affected social vices. The research used a survey methodology. The study's sample of 400 respondents was chosen from a group of 221,879 using Yamane's 1976 sample size calculation formula. A percentage and frequency table was used to evaluate the data from the structured questionnaire, and multiple regressions were used to verify the hypotheses. According to the study, youth unemployment has led to an increase in social vices like kidnapping, prostitution, robbery, and thuggery in the Ogbaru local government area. Therefore, the study suggests that in order to address the unemployment issue in Anambra State, Nigeria, government at all levels should generate more employment opportunities. To reduce youth unemployment in Nigeria, the government should also set up centers for vocational training and talent development.

The Roman Catholic Church and Youth Unemployment in South-East Nigeria

Abstract Like many places in Africa, youth unemployment in Nigeria is massive. Granted, some scholars have deliberated on the role of the Church in Nigeria in tackling it; their preoccupation, however, has been majorly with the Church in Nigeria as a whole, rather than with individual churches. Employing historical and descriptive phenomenological methodology, this article, on the contrary, considers the role of the Roman Catholic Church in South-East Nigeria, in the fight against the same issue, of youth unemployment. The article, among others, makes a case for a much more participation of faith-based organizations in confronting the many social problems facing the youths in contemporary Africa.

Social Entrepreneurship as a Panacea to Mitigate Nigerian Youth Unemployment

This paper is anchored on social entrepreneurship as a panacea for mitigating unemployment among the Nigerian youth. Without overemphasizing the condition of unemployment in Nigeria, an avalanche of studies have substantiated this assertion by reporting that the rate of youth unemployment is on the increase in Nigeria, causing frustration, dependency and dejection. With the increasing turnout of graduates yearly from tertiary institutions, many gradates still remain unemployed for a long time after graduation. The major objectives of the paper are; to examine the concept and meaning of social entrepreneurship, identify the role and importance of social entrepreneurship in mitigating youth unemployment in Nigeria, and to know the challenges of social entrepreneurship in Nigeria. However, this paper is mainly qualitative, hence relied on secondary sources of data. The methodological approach in this paper, therefore, is based on content analysis while social network theory remains the theoretical thrust.

The rate of youth unemployment in Nigeria, no doubt calls for concern. Moreover, innovative and creative skills seem to be lacking among unemployed youths. Consequently, social vices in Nigeria such as armed robbery, extortion through blackmail, and kidnapping and most recently, internet fraud have become rampant. The lack of innovative and creative skills among most of the youth could be adduced to their foundation or upbringing Education atre-primary and primary schools in Nigeria overlook the role of foundational creative and innovative skill development, hence the clustering of curriculum inre-primary and primary schools. Currently, in a globally competitive world of ours, the average Nigerian child needs to explore his/her environment and be nurtured to think in a creative and innovative manner in order to globally compete favorably basCurriculum Developmened on current national and global needs. Making use of secondary data, this study argues that the high youth unemployment rate in Nigeria could be traced to lack of proper curriculum development from the Pre-Primary and Primary schools. This paper posits that the best way to enhance creativity and innovation among the Nigerian youths is to expose them to acquire these skills from their Pre-Primary school education level. Among the recommendations is that there should be a review of the curriculum at the elementary level to minimize the curriculum contents and increase the co-curriculum activities. Emphasis on assessment of learning should be more on vocational skills acquisition than grading and certification.

A VIABLE ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION AS AN ANTIDOTE FOR ERADICATION OF POVERTY AND UNEMPLOYMENT AMONG YOUTHS IN NIGERIA

Nigeria is passing through a period of uncertainty and pervasive economic recession which has further aggravated the problem of poverty and unemployment among Nigerian youths. It highlighted the lofty objectives of viable entrepreneurship education in Nigeria. The various factors responsible for poverty and youth employment in Nigeria were identified. Attention was also directed to the role of viable entrepreneurship education in eradicating poverty and youth unemployment in Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended, among others, that the curriculum of educational institutions in Nigeria should be more pragmatic and have built-in-job training programmes which would enable all students to acquire relevant entrepreneurial skills required for self-employment, job and wealth creation and poverty eradication.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION: A REMEDY TO YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA

In a developing nation, entrepreneurship education has been and would likewise continue to be a great economic stimulation to serve as a remedy to the youth unemployment in Nigeria. This paper focused on entrepreneurship education as a remedy to youth unemployment. Finally, government should create friendly, social political and economic environments so as to encourage investors in entrepreneurial ventures with good financial assistance and motivation.

Do entrepreneurial characteristics and education influence start-up potentials among undergraduates? Evidence from a developing country

Objective: Entrepreneurship education offers plausible policy options to curtail the consistent rise in youth unemployment in Nigeria. Understanding students’ entrepreneurial characteristics will assist university administrators, policymakers, scholars and practitioners to deliver contents that stimulate their entrepreneurial propensity. This study examines students’ entrepreneurial characteristics and how it, together with entrepreneurship education, shapes start-up potential among them in Nigeria. Research Design & Methods: The study adapts the personal entrepreneurial characteristics (PECs) scale developed by Management Systems International. Data were collected from three thousand two hundred and seventy-seven (N=3 277) students from six Nigerian universities. Descriptive and binary logistic regressions were used to estimate important PECs that influenced entrepreneurial interest among the students. Findings: The results show that majority of the students (92%) are interested in starting a business, while 36% of them are already running one form of enterprise. The level of entrepreneurship interest is also high. Generally, the mean/average score for the entire personal entrepreneurial characteristics is high, and specific means were computed for each element of PECs including opportunity seeking, risk-taking, information seeking, systematic planning and monitoring, persuasion and networking, commitment, persistence, demand for efficiency and quality, goal-setting and self-confidence. Binary logistic regression was adopted to examine the influence of PECs on the start-up potentials among the students using the mean scores computed from the PECs as the independent variables. The results show that students with high goal-setting characteristics and opportunity recognition characteristics are highly predisposed to entrepreneurship. The results further showed that students whose parents run businesses and attended entrepreneurship courses are significantly and highly likely to venture into business. Although persuasion and networking, risk-taking and persistence predispose the students to entrepreneurship, the variables were not significant. Implications & Recommendations: Entrepreneurship education in the country should therefore be re-designed such that students are adequately profiled to determine the kind of EE best suited for them. For those already practising entrepreneurship, the university administration could establish innovation hubs or labs, as well as business incubators, and organise annual innovation competition to help improve entrepreneurship education outcomes. Contribution & Value Added: The paper adopts personal entrepreneurial characteristics (PECs) as novel lenses to understand entrepreneurial inclinations among undergraduates in a developing country. Paying particular attention to PEC is important for policymakers and university administrators to improve the policy outcomes of entrepreneurship education policy.

Governance and Youth Unemployment in Nigeria

Numerous studies have observed that governance matters in economic growth and subsequently employment generation. Despite the overwhelming evidences on the importance of this variable, there is surprisingly little research on how to promote it effectively in many developing countries. The problems facing the youth in the labour market has become more intense as a result, youths turn to less productive and less remunerative work at the informal sector. This paper therefore investigates the link between Governance, Youth Employment, Gross Capital Formation and Economic Growth. It utilizes the Granger non-Causality technique to explore the connection between these factors in sets. The discoveries uncover that there is bi-directional causal connection among governance and economic growth and furthermore between Economic growth and youth employment in Nigeria. The causality between Economic growth and capital formation is uni-directional from gross capital formation to Economic growth. It is discovered that there is no causal connection among employment and governance; and among employment and gross capital. It is recommended that the government should put on policies to increase growth so as to increase youth employment. Since capital formation causes growth and growth in turn causes youth employment; this implies that more investment in the country will indirectly cause youth employment. Government policies aimed at boosting both public and private investments in the country should be formulated; consequently the challenges of youth unemployment would be addressed.

Leadership Failure and Acute Youth Unemployment in Nigeria

The history of Nigeria is tainted with the absence of good moral and ethical values in the conduct of the ruling elites; this has adversely affected economic growth and development. Continued poverty reinforced by acute youth unemployment is a barrier to Nigerias quest for consolidating her democracy. A society of beggars, parasites and bandits cannot develop. Youth unemployment has been and is still a major problem in Nigeria. The statistics is staggering despite the political clamours against unemployment. The root of this problem originated in the visionless, selfish, mediocre, tribalistic and opportunistic small money-minded people masquerading as leaders who have continued to regenerate Nigerian political landscape over time. It is against this backdrop that this study examines the relationship between leadership failure and acute youth unemployment in Nigeria. A cross-sectional method was adopted and data was collected via a survey of three hundred (300) respondents in south-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria using non-probability sampling technique. Data collected were analyzed using correlation and linear regression analysis with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21. The results of the study revealed that there is significant relationship between leadership failure and acute youth unemployment. As predicted, the study also showed that leadership failure exerts a positive and statistically significant impact on acute youth unemployment in Nigeria. On the basis of these findings, the study recommends among others that the government at all levels should empower the jobless youths through genuine empowerment schemes that would equip them to be self-employed and employer of labor, revamped agricultural development schemes to create job opportunities for the unemployed youths roaming about on the Nigeria streets and the actualization of youth empowerment would be impossible if the war against corruption is not intensified.

The effect of minimum wage and inflationary pressure on youth unemployment in Nigeria

This study carried out an empirical investigation on the impact of minimum wage and inflationary pressure on youth unemployment in Nigeria from 1991 to 2019 using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag method to estimate the multiple regression model. The model captured the impact of Inflation, GDP Growth Rate, FDI, Government Expenditure, and Minimum Wage as determinants of youth unemployment in Nigeria. The results show that minimum wage exerts a significant impact on youth unemployment in the country, whereas inflation does not significantly influence youth unemployment. These results disapprove argument in the literature that supports minimum wage as an income policy to improve the welfare of workers in Nigeria because it raises the youth unemployment level in the country. Hence, the study concludes that minimum wage determination should be market-based. With this, the study recommends that the Nigerian government seek alternative measures of improving workers’ welfare and reduce youth unemployment in the country.
