BANDUNG’s POLITICAL AND YOUTH ENGAGEMENT IN THE DIGITAL SPHERE

The development of political information media has progressed very rapidly. This research tries to explore and measure the political literacy and political participation of young people in Bandung City. The theory then used is cyberdemocracy to see the development of information space. The article uses a qualitative method based on library research to collect and analyze data from various literature sources, complemented by survey results from IPRC, to explore Cyberdemocracy theory and its application to social realities in Bandung City. The results show that the level of political literacy and political participation of the younger generation in Bandung City towards political information is still low. The results show that the advancement of information media only goes linearly with the increase in political literacy and political participation in virtual public spaces. As many as 42.3% of young people in Bandung City have been exposed to doubtful news or information. Exposure in this context is like receiving, reading, or even spreading information that is still doubtful and 52.4% have never expressed an opinion about political issues on digital sphere.

The Role of Young People's Political Participation in Building a Strong Democracy: Case Study in Indonesia

This research discusses political participation among young people as the key to building and improving the political system in Indonesia. Young people play an important role as the future generation of voters who have great potential in determining political direction and policies. In this context, political awareness and political education are key factors in forming a young generation who are active and responsible in the political process. This research also discusses challenges such as apathy towards politics and efforts that can be made to overcome this problem. Through active participation, comprehensive political education, and involvement in political dialogue, the younger generation has great potential to become agents of positive change in building a strong and clean democracy in Indonesia.

Analisis Minat Politik Kaum Muda Dalam Menyikapi Pemerintahan Era Jokowi 2019-2023 (Studi kasus pada mahasiswa Jombang)

This study aims to analyze the political interest of young people in Jombang during the reign of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and the factors that influence the political interest of young people. This type of research is qualitative, this research explores various forms of formal and non-formal political participation carried out by young people. The data collection technique used a purposive method with eight student informants spread across four universities in Jombang. Source of data obtained based on primary data and secondary data. To collect data, researchers used observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The data analysis model used is data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The results of this study indicate that the political participation of young people increased during the Jokowi administration, influenced by information disclosure, access to technology, and contemporary issues that are of concern to the younger generation. Nonetheless, there are still challenges in empowering youth political participation, including structural barriers and lack of representation in public policies. From the results of this study it can be concluded that the importance of empowering youth in the political decision-making process in Indonesia to ensure a more inclusive future of democracy and the factors causing youth's lack of interest in politics include the political perception that it is boring to discuss and follow developments. political and economic education.

Political socialisation narratives of young activists. Contexts, settings, and actors.

ABSTRACT The literature on the political participation of young people fluctuates between two approaches. The first stresses the absence of political participation in this age group, qualifying this condition as problematic. The second focusses on a distinctive political horizon, broader and non-institutional, emphasizing creativity and youth mobilisation in certain civic arenas. Regardless of which position one takes, it seems clear that the way in which young people deal with the political universe is undergoing changes. To examine and understand these changes, it is important to analyse the processes of political socialisation. This article is based on the biographical narratives generated by young activists in the context of a project completed in Portugal. We looked at the processes of political socialisation to understand what contexts were crucial for their formation as activists. Their narratives clearly lay out the contexts, settings, and actors that they consider relevant for their political socialisation. This material is the object of our analysis. We have concluded that friends and peers are crucial in this process at different stages of life. Through friends, knowledge bases and ways of questioning the world are constructed, while at the same time systems of political action are also experimented.

Developing a Digital and Traditional Political Participation (DTPP) Scale for Youth: A Validity and Reliability Study

The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a political participation scale for youth, considering both traditional and digital political participation (DTPP). The research was conducted using 458 participants from Turkey, Italy, and Romania, aged between 15 and 29 years. Explanatory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were performed to test the structural validity of the scale. EFA results illustrated that scale consisted of three factors and the total variance was 61.23%. These factors were labeled as “digital political support”, “traditional political support” and “digital political following”. During confirmatory factor analysis, the three-factor structure was tested, and the resulting model produced an acceptable goodness of fit The scale consists of 39 items and the reliability coefficients for each subscale vary from .92 and .95. The results show that the scale is valid and reliable to measure traditional and digital political participation of young people.

​Levels and Forms of Political Participation in Selected Youth Organisations Operating in Poland

The purpose of the paper is to present the results of research concerning contemporary levels and forms of political participation of young people involved in selected youth organisations operating in Poland. The research was qualitative. Data collection involved a search of secondary data sources. All the available documents posted on the websites of the investigated organisations, including their statutes, rules and regulations, and reports and accounts covering activities and operations, as well as social media (FB) posts, were analysed. An induction method was used to provide an analysis of the content of the data for the “participation” category. Our results show that the main forms of political participation that the youth organisations demonstrate in the analysed documents are social and educational campaigns, demonstrations and notifications of important dates with different intensities on the local, national, and international levels.

In this article the participation of young people in the political life of Kazakhstan and the role of new media will be examined. The theoretical and conceptual significance of political participation and social networks is discussed. The aim of the research is to contribute to the debate in this area by exploring how new media contribute to the participation of young people in political life. As a hypothesis of the work, the concept was adopted, according to which «new media contribute to the increase of political participation and activity of young people.» Based on the research work of the youth of Kazakhstan and Russia on the use of social networks, the analysis of the political participation of young people and the interaction of new media is carried out. A comparative analysis of the activity of the political participation of the youth of Russia and Kazakhstan is carried out, the features of the political participation of the youth of Kazakhstan are revealed. It has been found that the three most frequently used social networks among the youth of these two countries are Vkontakte, Instagram, and YouTube. In order to study the specifics of online and offline participation, a case study is conducted. The analysis of the political events that took place in Kazakhstan and Russia is carried out, in particular the large protests in support of Alexei Navalny in Russia and the events of“«Qandy Qantar”« in Kazakhstan. Based on the results of a comparative analysis, the study has revealed the level of interest of young people in Kazakhstan in politics. As a result, it is concluded that currently young people receive political information through social networks. It is concluded that in the future Kazakhstan has the potential for the development of political and civic activity of young people in social networks.

Media Literacy and Young People’s Integrity in Political Participation: A Structural Equation Modelling Approach

The unethical activities related to weak political participation integrity on social media have influenced negative behaviours among supporters, particularly the young people. Social media transmits information on demonstration activities by enabling the creation, collection, and dissemination of false information or seditious libel, which exposes the country to external attacks and threats. Furthermore, young people’s negative political participation activities on social media, such as creating and disseminating false information, making harsh remarks, generating turmoil to acquire popularity or go viral, can potentially lead to cybercrimes. This research identified the impacts of media literacy competencies, namely access, analysis and evaluation, creation, reflection, and action, on political participation integrity among young people. This study distributed a survey to targeted university students in Melaka, Malaysia using the simple random sampling method. The students’ participation was purely voluntary. A total of 388 responses were successfully collected. The structural equation authenticated that four competencies significantly influenced the participants’ political participation integrity: access, analysis and evaluation, reflection, and action. In addition, young people who have media literacy skills showed a stronger preference to engage in political activities with higher moral conduct. The findings provided valuable insights about young people's political participation integrity on social media in Malaysia. Политическая самоидентификация молодежи: параметры формирования

The political self-identification of young people is a significant indicator of the state stability. In the context of new geopolitical challenges for Russia, following the Russian military special operation in Ukraine, decision-makers face the task of intensifying cooperation with the younger generation and forming a holistic and critically meaningful approach to new political and economic realities. The article analyzes the main sources of self-identification of young people, factors influencing the political participation of the younger generation and existing channels of interaction between young people and the state. The empirical basis for the article is sociological surveys, as well as regulatory legal acts of the Russian Federation. The author resumes that despite the established and generally effective mechanisms for stimulating the political participation of young people in Russia, there is still a significant space for improving the quality of interaction on the track of «government – young generation», which is reflected, among others, in the formation of an attractive image by the state itself.

Political Participation of Youth in the State Duma Elections in 2021: Value Attitudes, Electoral Preferences and Political Behaviour

The article presents data from a study of the political participation of young people in the elections to the State Duma in 2021 in three main parameters: value attitudes, electoral preferences, and political behaviour. The authors conducted a combined sociological study: 9 focus groups (in 3 cities) and a quantitative online survey (number of respondents — 400 people with representativeness by sex and age for the entire general population “Russian youth”). The theoretical results of the study supplement the accumulated knowledge by obtaining up-to-date data on the values, electoral preferences, and political behaviour of young people, which had a direct impact on the participation of this social group in the State Duma elections in 2021.

Youth Leadership: problems of youth participation in political life

The article reveals the problems of youth participation in political communications in the conditions of the information society and the new forms of political interaction (online / offline). The authors proceed from the premise that youth participation in political communication includes not only activities associated with traditional forms (voting, membership in political parties), but also with negative actions (extremism, xenophobia, terror, etc.) and hence political and civic education plays a significant role in the study of the political system and decision-making processes. The author’s approach is to consider social media as a modern tool for expanding civic participation in the modern political process, the use of which creates the possibility of creating and developing the image of a youth leader. New possibilities and forms of political communication have opened up prospects for research on the political participation of young people, and it seems to remain a trend for to researchers, politicians and youth workers in the near future.

‘Young People and Environmental Activism: The Transformation of Democratic Politics’

ABSTRACT This article provides an introduction to a Special Issue of The Journal of Youth Studies on young people and environmental politics. This volume was motivated by the wave of youth environmental activism from 2019 onwards, and by the need to address the gathering environmental crisis in the wake of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. The introduction sets the scene for the Special Issue by explaining how and why environmental activism has grown so rapidly since 2019. It introduces readers to the articles in the volume, which: study the values and attitudes that foster learning about and engagement with environmental politics amongst younger generations; examine how these values and attitudes act as mobilising forces in young people's political participation; and, investigate the role of cross-cutting issues such as education, political communication, life-style politics and also collectivism in shaping youth engagement in environmental politics. Together, these articles show how youth environmental activism is having a transformative effect upon democratic politics and democratic life in many countries across the world.

РАЗВИТИЕ ГРАЖДАНСКО-ПРАВОВОЙ КОМПЕТЕНТНОСТИ КАК ФАКТОР УЧАСТИЯ РОССИЙСКОЙ МОЛОДЕЖИ В ПРАКТИЧЕСКОЙ ПОЛИТИКЕ

The purpose of the article is to analyze the factors influencing the development of practical skills of civil-law competence of Russian youth. Much attention is given to research methods such as an interdisciplinary system approach, a sociological method and a factor analysis. The author emphasizes that the priority attention of Russian researchers is devoted to the improvement of the educational component of civil law competence of a new generation. It is stressed that the issue of practical skills developing of civil and political participation of young people is undeservedly overlooked. The author draws attention to the fact that a new generation of Russians needs to test the theoretical knowledge obtained in political practice. A number of factors that prevent Russian youth from testing democratic practices of civic participation are revealed. As a result of the research, the author draw conclusions that shortage of mechanisms of civic participation cannot be compensated by the state policy actively pursued today to improve the standard of living of young people, patriotic education, stimulating the development of traditional family values and improving the efficiency of social elevators. The necessity of developing an appropriate mechanism for the development of civil law competencies of young people in practice is argued. The active involvement of young people in the activities of public reception offices at state bodies and public organizations, human rights schools, intellectual analytical projects and competitions are recommended.

POLITICAL POTENTIAL OF YOUTH: ACCORDING TO SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH

The issues of studying political values and orientations of youth are of significant scientific interest from standpoint of analyzing socio-cultural components of youth political potential. From a practical point of view, comprehensive study of peculiarities of youth political potential is important for assessing their readiness and participation in political life of the country, since today's youth, having come into politics in the near future, will determine vectors of country's development. The research goal is to study the socio-cultural characteristics of political potential of modern youth. The novelty of this work is development of author's structural model of youth political potential and analysis of features of its formation and implementation in youth environment. Value components of youth political potential act as resources and reserves that determine content and nature of young generation participation in political sphere. They shape youth attitude to politics, willingness to be included in political process and political participation of young people. The use of materials from the author's sociological research and secondary analysis of other studies made it possible to analyze political values and orientations, attitudes and interest in politics, opportunities, willingness to participate, and involvement of youth in political life of the country. Research materials indicate a low interest of youth in politics, readiness to participate in political life, which is largely due to redistribution of youth interests towards personal priorities that are relevant for younger generation: family, work, etc. All this requires an appeal to comprehensive analysis of political orientations and features of political participation of modern youth, identifying resources for involving young people in politics through development and implementation of their political potential.

Youth doing politics in times of increasing inequalities

Particularly in the current context of rapid political change, it is crucial to understand the political participation of young people and what underpins their political engagement patterns as well the as the inequalities that may lie beneath them. While there is a rich literature on youth participation, to date we have lacked the data to carry out detailed subgroup analyses to understand differences in the political participation between different groups of youth cross-nationally. The papers in this Special Issue all examine different aspects of youth participation in the current context. They examine key questions for participation including the inequalities, socialising influences, polarisation, online participation, radical political views, tolerance, life engagement and opportunities for social inclusion. This Special Issue thus provides a contemporary analysis of youth participation in Europe in the current historical juncture.

Case Study Report-Analysis of Hack by Triple J and Junkee

An increasing number of young people have lost their interests in browsing news and sharing their opinions on traditional news outlets, because they are stereotyped in most mainstream media organizations which also treat youth’s comments as without any authoritative. To correct the mainstream media's misrepresentation and ignorance of young people, some online media platforms have devoted to develop youth journalism and encourage their digital engagement. In this report, the author choose Hack by Triple J and Junkee, the representative youth media in Australia, as two cases to analyze the reasons why they are more popular among Aussie youth than conventional media outlets and how they Reinvigorate young people's political participation.

Young People's Political Participation: New and Old Forms in Contemporary Spain

This article is related to the literature concerning the decline of traditional forms of political participation in young people. It seeks to understand younger Spaniards' attitudes towards active participation in democratic processes and, more specifically, differences between those young people engaged in citizen-oriented political actions related to political parties and those engaged in cause-oriented activities. The main goal of this paper is to explain the relationship between young people and politics, focusing on three types of comparisons: (i) between young people, adults and seniors, (ii) in both kinds of actions, and (iii) across three theoretical models that scholars have been used indiscriminately to testing different models explaining why people became active in politics, each of them influenced by different political science research traditions. Data show a great disparity in the explanatory power of independent variables among age groups. A better performance of civic volutantism model and also in cause-oriented participation.

News videos consumption in an age of new media: a comparison between adolescents and adults

ABSTRACT Contemporary audiences have abundant access to news anywhere, anytime and through a wide range of media. Due to the short length of news items, they do not require prolonged attentional focus. Consequently, the genre is consequential for performing simultaneous activities, which are related (i.e. second screening) or unrelated (i.e. media multitasking) to the content of the news items. Despite the potential of second screen activities to increase the political participation of young people, and the fact that adolescents are heavy users of digital media, there is almost no data on the extent to which they perform such activities. Also, there are almost no comparative data about the rates of news video consumption of adolescents vs. adults. This descriptive study analyzes how adolescents and adults consume news video content in an era of second screens. For four consecutive days, subjects reported their viewing behaviors using a dedicated mobile application. Results demonstrate that adolescents consume significantly less news video content compared to adults; smartphones occupy a more prominent role in their news consumption behavior compared to adults; and they are significantly more involved in Second Screening activities. Implications of the findings for understanding adolescents’ contemporary media ecology are examined. IMPACT SUMMARY a. Prior State of Knowledge: Young people are the primary age group that consumes news content mainly on digital platforms, and simultaneously performs multitasking and second screening activities. b. Novel Contributions: Adolescents’ consumption habits are significantly different from those of adults: they consume less news, the smartphone occupies a more prominent role in their news consumption behavior, and they are significantly more involved in second screening activities. c. Practical implications: The question of how adolescents consume news content has sparked significant interest of scholars and parents alike. As adolescents are in a developmental stage in which they socialize and acquire habits that will affect them later in life, an understanding of their media consumption habits can have significant consequences contemporarily, and possibly at later stages in their lives. The paper provides novel insights about adolescents’ news consumption patterns.

Prospects for the development of digital forms of political participation of generation Z in modern Russia

The article considers the forms of political participation of generation Z in modern Russia and gives an assessment of the prospects for digital forms of this participation. The paper describes the characteristics that distinguish generation Z in terms of the influence of these characteristics on the political behavior of its representatives, as well as possible motives for the political participation of young people. The authors give the results of a study that allow you to get answers to the questions: what features make this or that form of political participation the most attractive for generation Z? Is generation Z really critical and negative about regime? Can digital forms of political participation become mainstream in the country’s political life thanks to youth and the rapid digitalization of society? The paper describes the criteria for the attractiveness of various forms of political participation, such as rallies, actions, demonstrations, strikes, hunger strikes, revolutions, elections, crowdfunding, written appeals to the authorities and petitions, participation in political movements and parties, meetings with political figures. These criteria are: personal safety, speed of implementation of the form, the ability to attract attention and find like-minded persons. According to the results of the study, the authors substantiate the conclusion about the prospects of using digital forms (in particular, online voting) of political participation, primarily due to the speed and security that distinguish digital forms of political participation from traditional ones: it is very convenient to express your civic position from anywhere in the world, while simultaneously doing other things and not fearing negative consequences for participation. In addition, digital forms of political participation are demanded by young people as the most convenient, as they are built into their “natural habitat” – the space of social networks.
