Sport is a physical activity needed by humans which has many purposes, such as maintaining body health, maintaining mental health (refreshing), achieving achievements, building character and other people (Wijaya, 2018). According to Kurt et al., (2023) swimming is a sport that can be used as a means of talent search, achievement, recreation, education, rehabilitation and self-preservation. Coaches, facilities and infrastructure, training programs, athlete development, government support and parents are some of the components that contribute to good performance. Sports achievements can be achieved through professional and quality sports training. In the sport of swimming, there are several events, namely events representing clubs, events representing regions at the provincial level, events representing regions at the national level, and events representing international national levels. The process of improving actions or techniques that have been carried out is known as evaluation. This research is motivated by the fact that there is still no research on the Mojokerto City swimming team in participating in the 2023 East Java Regional Swimming Championship. This research aims to cycle the Mojokerto City swimming team in participating in the 2023 East Java Regional Swimming Championship. The use of the SWOT method is important in analyzing and determining points earned. This method focuses on evaluating the Mojokerto City swimming team in participating in the 2023 Regional Swimming Championships which is expected to contribute to achievements for the City of Mojokerto in the future. To explain the evaluation results, the methodology used is qualitative descriptive research. The source of information comes from licensed swimming coaches. Data collection methods include interviews and documentation. Research findings include, (1) strengths include: the Mojokerto City swimming team is in young athletes and young coaches. If young athletes are coached properly, they will develop, while young coaches who are full of ideas, if given space or a platform, can express their aspirations. (2) Weaknesses include: no management questions, no atlhletes selection, no impressive Training Center (TC), no space or forum for young coaches to express their aspirations. (3) Opportunities include: the Mojokerto City swimming team has good opportunities for the future because this team is dominated by young athletes and young coaches. (4) Threats include: if the existing management is not immediately improved, the young athletes and young coaches, the Mojokerto City swimming team is threatened with not being able to get maximum results in future events.

Determination of Football Academy Coaches' Attitudes and Thoughts Towards Match Analysis in Football

This study aimed to determine the attitudes and opinions of football academy coaches towards match analysis in football and assess if these vary based on demographic variables. Using a descriptive survey method, data were collected from 210 football academy coaches participating in training in Istanbul during the 2022-2023 season. The study included coaches from 21 clubs in the Spor Toto Super League and Spor Toto 1st League, within the Turkish Football Federation's Football Academies Project.No sampling was used; instead, the entire population was targeted with voluntary participation, resulting in 112 respondents. Data were collected using the Football Specific Match Analysis Scale by Gürkan et al. (2023). Due to non-normal distribution of data, Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal-Wallis Analysis of Variance were employed for statistical analysis, with significance set at 0.05.Findings revealed that technology use in football, specifically match analysis, is seen as highly beneficial by coaches. Match analysis was considered significantly important and contributive to their development. Coaches generally rated match analysis as "very high" in importance and contribution to player development. It was also found that:Younger coaches and those with less experience in the academy league rated match analysis more positively.Coaches with higher education levels and higher monthly incomes were more likely to value match analysis highly.Differences in attitudes and opinions were significant across age groups, tenure in the academy, education levels, and income brackets.These results indicate the growing importance of match analysis in football training and development, influenced by demographic factors.Keywords: Academy, Football, Football Academy Coach, Match Analysis.

Winning Robotics Competition Strategy: Theory of Creating Projects in Robotics Education

The subject of robotics in education has a significant impact on the development of skills of students. Studying the main factors motivating robotics to participate in competitions, project competitions, and win prizes is always relevant. There are many competitions in robotics. In particular, one of the competitions for developing robotics in education is WRO. However, it is essential to know and research several factors that can lead to a place in a competition and support young coaches and participants. Higher education institutions that already have courses in educational robotics can benefit from the proposed approach, which allows them to develop new projects with robotics elements.

Examining sports coaches’ mental health literacy: evidence from UK athletics

ABSTRACT There is increasing interest in the role sports coaches are expected to play in supporting the mental health of elite and sub-elite athletes. This paper presents the first single-sport, mixed-methods, study of UK athletics coaches’ mental health literacy (MHL). We extend previous quantitative survey-based UK studies by incorporating the qualitative lived experiences of coaches into the analysis. We explore coaches’ knowledge of mental health and illness, experience of mental health training, and willingness to support athletes with mental illness. An online survey of 184 UK athletics coaches revealed that MHL was highest among women, younger coaches, and coaches with less experience. No statistical differences were found between MHL score and disability, sexuality or region in which coaches worked. Interviews held with a sub-sample of 25 survey respondents revealed a lack of clear consensus about what constitutes mental health and mental illness, and that coaches’ everyday views of these did not always correspond with formal definitions or conceptualisations. Coaches’ views were instead typically characterised by dominant psychological and psychiatric understandings of mental health and illness, while the significance of social relations and inequalities were often overlooked. There was a general willingness among coaches to support athlete mental health as an aspect of their duty of care, but most lacked the relevant training and understanding to do so effectively because such training was not implemented systematically within their organisational practice. Coaches’ call for mandatory athletics-specific mental health training was one strategy thought to better enhance coaches’ skills, knowledge and intentions to provide and seek mental health support. Important though MHL training and other sources of support is, we conclude that this is likely insufficient on its own and that there is a parallel need for multi-level, systems-wide, approaches in sport and wider society to better support the mental health of everyone.

The Cost of Conservatism

Abstract In college football, winning begets winning and losing begets losing. So why did the University of Minnesota, no doubt among college football's elite before World War II, not follow this rich-get-richer trajectory, and what does their descent suggest about the nature of college football? Minnesota fell because of their reluctance to change in a rapidly changing world. College football evolved especially quickly after World War II, but Minnesota's famous football coach, Bernie Bierman, and the new university president, James Morrill, clung to notions of college football that had been popular before the war but were antiquated after it. Bierman continued to deploy old-fashioned strategies, while Morrill's persistent advocacy for the less-commercialized rules of the pre–World War II era hampered recruiting and discouraged the best young coaches from working at Minnesota. The school's unique fall suggests that college football rewards conformity, that unilateral attempts to change the game will fail, and that conservatism has an enduring cost.

The football coaches formation is a topic of considerable analysis and constant development. Today football coaches are very heterogeneous, whether in terms of experience as a coach, age, context of intervention and even past practice as a player. This heterogeneity may be more evident in regional football, since it is the basis of this sport, where most players and coaches begin their careers. Thus, regional football can present a big difference between the age and experience of the coaches, which leads to different views and interventions on the part of the coaches. So it is relevant to analyze the importance that coaches (expert and young) in this context give to different professional skills to understand what their convergences and divergences, 40 interviews were conducted (20 expert coaches and 20 young coaches) with an average age of 35.6 years and standard deviation of 8.6 years, following a script composed of five parts: a Personal and socio-professional characterization, the importance given by the interviewees to the Competencies: “Knowledge-Knowledge "," Knowledge-Do "and Knowledge-Be". We observed that both groups give relative importance to the different “knowledges”, however it is the Young Coaches who present the best results, with (51%) of items of (PNFT-RCFG).

Preoccupation with results can be damaging for young coaches

Sports coaching research can portray an overly simplistic picture of the activity leading to young coaches being underprepared for intra-personal conflicts during coaching careers (Cushion, 2006; Jones, 2009; Potrac et al., 2016). This paper builds on work that shows coaching is emotionally challenging (Thelwell, 2017; Gowling, 2019). Autoethnography illustrates the first authors inner struggles with their perceived effectiveness while trying to prove their worth in the elite junior coaching context. There are four main findings (1) the performance narrative influences young coaches’ behaviour; (2) inability to assess one’s own effectiveness, without using player results as the sole criteria can have a negative emotional effect on coaches; (3) relational narratives are present in elite junior coaching; (4) provides governing bodies with opportunities to improve the preparation of young coaches for intra-personal challenges related to coaching.

Hobby, career or vocation? Meanings in sports coaching and their implications for recruitment and retention of coaches

ABSTRACT Rationale/Purpose: Traditional European sports clubs are facing increasing pressures to professionalise their services, while also encountering difficulties in the recruitment and retention of the coaching workforce. We used the concept of meaningful work to explore why coaching is worthwhile to coaches and how they have responded to the changes in the structural and narrative context of their work. Methodology: Drawing on narrative inquiry, we explored the various meanings and justifications that athletics (track and field) coaches assign to coaching in Finland and England. Twenty-three coaches (8 women, 15 men) aged 22–86 participated in narrative interviews that were analysed using thematic narrative analysis. Findings: The younger coaches mainly constructed coaching as a hobby and more often placed value on personal benefits, whereas many older coaches described coaching as a vocation/calling and emphasised causes that transcend the self (e.g. tradition, duty and leaving a legacy). Practical implications: Understanding the diverse ways in which coaching is meaningful is vital for supporting the recruitment and retention of the coaching workforce in sport clubs. Research contribution: The study extends understandings of meaningful work in coaching and how coaching is shaped by the broader structural and ideological contexts of the work.

Examining the Mental Well-Being of Australian Sport Coaches.

Background: Research has highlighted the multitude of factors that are negatively associated with coach mental well-being but has failed to investigate how the determinants of mental well-being can affect the coach both positively and negatively. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to investigate levels of mental well-being among sport coaches and assess whether areas of work life—specifically workload and control—are related to levels of mental well-being. Method: An online survey comprising demographic and coaching experience details, the Areas of Work Life Scale (AWS), and the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale was completed by 464 Australian coaches involved in a range of sports. Differences in coach mental well-being according to key demographic and coaching-related subgroups were assessed using separate t-test and ANOVA analyses and the magnitude of effects was determined using Cohen’s d and the eta-squared (ή2) statistics. Multiple linear regression was used to examine relationships between both workload and control and mental well-being after controlling for age, gender, coaching setting and weekly coaching activity. Results: The findings indicate poorer mental well-being among both male and younger coaches and indicate that coach mental well-being is related to the ability to self-manage the workload associated with their role as a coach as well as greater autonomy over coaching-related tasks and activities. Specifically, a one-unit increase in AWS workload and AWS control were associated with ~three- and ~four-unit increases in coach mental well-being, respectively. Conclusion: Greater provision of resources and education is required to assist coaches to manage their own mental well-being, while being supported by the organisation they coach for. Enabling coaches to balance their coaching requirements and to have control over their environment will improve their ability to constantly coach at a high standard.

Percepción de los entrenadores sobre la toma de decisión de los jugadores en la iniciación al baloncesto

El baloncesto es un deporte colectivo de cooperación-oposición. La táctica es un factor importante y está basada en componentes cognitivos y motrices: percepción, decisión y ejecución. Para enseñar este deporte hay alternativas basadas en la táctica. Se trata de comenzar por la comprensión del juego para conseguir los aprendizajes tácticos y técnicos. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo conocer el perfil de un conjunto de entrenadores de baloncesto en la iniciación, respecto a cómo plantean la táctica, en particular el componente de las toma de decisión en la enseñanza. Han participado 89 entrenadores, 72 hombres y 17 mujeres. Han completado un cuestionario con 15 preguntas relacionadas con sus datos personales y sobre el uso del componente táctico en la enseñanza del baloncesto. Los resultados muestran una mayoría de entrenadores jóvenes que fomentan frecuentemente la toma de decisión y utilizan ejercicios de superioridad e igualdad numérica.

Mentoring in Sports for the Development of the Successful High School Coach

This study involves the surveying of current high school coaches in the state of North Dakota who are certified by the National Federation of High Schools through the completion of the required courses, including “The Fundamentals of Coaching”, “Concussion Diagnosis and Prevention”, as well as CPR, First Aid and AED certification in a current, active status. The participant coaches (n=113), were sent a survey through email using the Qualtrics Survey Program. This survey contained documentation of demographic information, coaching history, opinions regarding issues in coaching and how they are/can be addressed. This survey also discussed influences in the coaches life and how they have shaped their coaching careers. Coaching education and mentoring suggestions are also offered by the subjects as ways to improve the coaching job field as well as struggles they see mentoring bringing if a program were to be introduced.Results indicated that the majority of coaches would be open to mentoring programs in their school. This includes communication sessions, coaching education, sport specific coaching development, and time for personal interaction with other coaches aimed at creating relationships and discussing professional successes, coaching issues, and questions they have. Results also show a trend happening. There is a shortage of coaches with 11-20 years of experience and a large number of head coaches that have less than five years of experience. This trend is hinting to coaches leaving the profession after ten years, with not a lot of experienced people left to take over. Young coaches lead to a large learning curve, immaturity with dealing with certain situations, and lack the experience of actually teaching the game itself.

Boosting youth sport? Implementation of Norwegian youth sport policy through the 2016 Lillehammer Winter Youth Olympic Games

Neo-institutional concepts of organizational change and organizational reproduction combined with implementation theory are employed to examine the implementation of the Norwegian youth sport policy (YSP) associated with the Youth Olympic Games. The YSP also called ‘youth campaign’, aims at increasing the number of young leaders, young coaches and young athletes. Data were generated from semi-structured interviews and observations and show that implementation is characterized by revitalization of existing practices within the Norwegian sports system through translation and bricolage and innovative entrepreneurship. Our data indicate that the focus of the implementation was on the recruitment and education of young leaders. The development of young coaches and the recruitment and retention of young athletes are neglected. The non-involvement of national sport federations and sports clubs as well as the complexity of administrative layers are causes for the lack of effective implementation. In sum, a lasting impact on the Norwegian youth sport development is doubtful.

Coaches' Beliefs and Knowledge: Training Programs Used by French Professional Coaches to Increase Ball-throwing Velocity in Elite Handball Players

The goal of this study is to understand through a questionnaire survey how professional French handball coaches build their training programs (TP) to increase ball velocity. Nineteen surveys (representing 67.86% of all coaches in the country) were received and then analyzed. The questionnaire was composed of three parts: coach characteristics; general strength; and handball-specific strength program for upper limbs and trunk. The questions were formulated for an analog Likert scale from 1 (strongly disagree; never; very low) to 6 (strongly agree; very often, very high). The results show that i) coaches preferentially use concentric and plyometric muscle contractions in order to increase player power and velocity output; ii) to increase ball velocity, coaches focus on shoulder internal rotation, elbow extension and abdominal oblique muscles; and iii) there is a difference of choice in the TP based on the coaches' level of academic degree (AD) and age: young coaches with high AD build their TP more in accordance with recent scientific knowledge, while older ones with low AD build TP based on either older knowledge or on beliefs.

To Be or Not to Be Invited Youth Sport: Young People’s Influence in Voluntary Sport

AbstractInfluence and the opportunity to have one’s voice heard are fundamental rights valid for all people, including also children and youths. Despite this, research shows that young people’s voices have received less attention and young people have no influence in many contexts in which they find themselves (Evans, 2007; Fundberg, 2009; Redelius, 2005). In Sweden, the emphasis on influence can be linked to the fact that the sport club activities of the Swedish state are seen as an important arena for the civic education of young people (The Swedish Sports Confederation, 2005, 2011). The aim of this study is to explore young coaches and their opportunities to influence in the Swedish sport clubs with focus on what the youths themselves say about influence and power. We use Bourdieus’ theories on social fields to bring to light which youths are chosen to be leaders and their possibilities to influence. The results show that for young coaches to have influence, both their habitus and capital are required to ‘match’ the social context into which they are entering. One way of maintaining power is not to change the accepted way of working, which excludes the young coaches from challenging in the battle for positions.

“The Strength of Nebraska”

Boyd Epley was hired as the first full-time strength and conditioning coach at the University of Nebraska in 1969. Epley's hiring was the result of his extensive knowledge of strength training, an injury, and several disappointing seasons for the Cornhusker football team. An enterprising young coach, Tom Osborne, recognized that injured football players who trained with Epley, then an injured varsity pole-vaulter, returned to the team stronger than when they left. Osborne and Epley were able to convince head football coach and athletic director, Bob Devaney, that his belief that weight training was detrimental to athletic performance was unfounded. After starting the Husker Power program, Epley consistently worked to make it more scientific and specific to the demands of football. The results of Epley's work speak for themselves, over a career that spanned 35 years, football teams under his tutelage recorded 356 wins, 5 national championships, and a host of national player of the year award winners. In addition to his work as a practitioner of strength and conditioning, Epley also played an integral role in organizing a disparate group of individuals into a recognizable profession. He was the driving force in founding the National Strength and Conditioning Association in 1978. The organization would go on to fund and disseminate research in the field, resulting in the highly skilled practitioners of strength and conditioning practicing today.

Young Coaches and Supportive Environments

Young Coaches and Supportive Environments Sport is a very popular recreational activity for young people in Sweden. To support children's and young people's sporting activities, the Swedish Parliament has invested EUR 200,000 over a four-year period. This initiative was given the name Idrottslyftet [Lift for Sport] and one of its goals was to recruit and retain young coaches. The aim of the study is to examine the investment made in young coaches with the focus on supportive environments. Questions are asked: (i) How have the various projects been structured and what were the desired objectives? (ii) What is meant by the term ‘supportive environment’? iii) Which young coaches is the project aimed at and who is the ‘right’ kind of coach? The data consists of plans and project descriptions. Moreover, this study uses a qualitative text analysis and has a cultural-sociological perspective based on Bourdieu's theories and concepts. The analysis shows that investments have consisted mainly of training programmes to recruit new coaches. The supportive environments are a priority and master-pupil relationship is a given model. The findings indicate that there is a belief that a re-examination of the traditionally prominent values is required if young people are to be recruited as coaches.

An Examination of the Stretching Practices of Division I and Division III College Football Programs in the Midwestern United States

Research supports the use of preactivity warm-up and stretching, and the purpose of this study was to determine whether college football programs follow these guidelines. Questionnaires designed to gather demographic, professional, and educational information, as well as specific pre- and postactivity practices, were distributed via e-mail to midwestern collegiate programs from NCAA Division I and III conferences. Twenty-three male coaches (12 from Division IA schools and 11 from Division III schools) participated in the study. Division I schools employed certified strength coaches (CSCS; 100%), whereas Division III schools used mainly strength coordinators (73%), with only 25% CSCS. All programs used preactivity warm-up, with the majority employing 2-5 minutes of sport-specific jogging/running drills. Pre stretching (5-10 minutes) was performed in 19 programs (91%), with 2 (9%) performing no pre stretching. Thirteen respondents used a combination of static/proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation/ballistic and dynamic flexibility, 5 used only dynamic flexibility, and 1 used only static stretching. All 12 Division I coaches used stretching, whereas only 9 of the 11 Division III coaches did (p = 0.22). The results indicate that younger coaches did not use pre stretching (p = 0.30). The majority of the coaches indicated that they did use post stretching, with 11 of the 12 Division I coaches using stretching, whereas only 5 of the 11 Division III coaches used stretching postactivity (p = 0.027). Divisional results show that the majority of Division I coaches use static-style stretching (p = 0.049). The results of this study indicate that divisional status, age, and certification may influence how well research guidelines are followed. Further research is needed to delineate how these factors affect coaching decisions.

The Influence of Leader Behaviors, Coach Attributes, and Institutional Variables on Performance and Satisfaction of Collegiate Basketball Teams

Based on Chelladurai and Carron's (1978) multidimensional theory of leadership, this study examined the relationship of leader behaviors, coach attributes, and institutional variables to team performance and athlete satisfaction. Collegiate basketball players (n = 251) representing 23 NAIA teams assessed their coach's leader behaviors and also indicated their satisfaction with various facets of their athletic experience. Regression analyses revealed that neither institutional nor coach attribute variables were significantly related to team performance or satisfaction. Leader behaviors, however, were found to be significantly related to these team outcomes. Analyses with individual satisfaction scores revealed that size of school, coach attributes, and leader behaviors were predictive of athlete satisfaction. Coaches who engaged in more frequent rewarding behavior, social support behavior, and a democratic style of decision-making produced more satisfied athletes. Moreover, younger coaches and those with better previous win/loss records were related to higher levels of athlete satisfaction.
