A field experiment was conducted from 1997 98 to 1999 2000 to work out the suitable planting pattern with different intercrops in pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.1 based intercropping system for Central Plain Zone of Uttar Pradesh under rainfed conditions. Overall soybean [Glysine max (L.) Merr.] intercropped with pigeonpea gave the highest net returns (Rs 19,465tha). In general, replacement series resulted in significantly higher pigeonpea equivalent yield than additive series. Highest net profitlrupee investment was recorded with blackgram (Phasolus mungo L.) pigeonpea (1.45). Key words : Additive series, Replacement series, Intercropping, Pigeonpea equivalent
