High and variable hydraulic resistance to embolism among three Asian juniper species

Over a background of a warming planet, with increasing occurrence of extreme climate events, junipers stand out as tree species thriving in inhospitable environments, enduring the cold, hot, and dry. Being part of the drought-adapted Cupressaceae Gray, some juniper species have been identified having among the most negative P50 values (vulnerability to xylem embolism) in the plant kingdom. Still, previous analyses skipped many Asian juniper species, some of which growing in arid conditions. Here we measured xylem vulnerability to embolism in three, yet unexplored, Asian juniper species: Juniperus drupacea growing in Israel, and J. pseudosabina and J. seravschanica growing in Uzbekistan. Branches were sampled from five trees per species and vulnerability curves were constructed using the Cavitron method, from which P50 was calculated. Xylem anatomy measurements were used to define torus overlap and maximum xylem specific hydraulic conductivity. These hydraulic traits were tested against species and site climate and in the context of species phylogeny. P50 of the Eastern Mediterranean J. drupacea was -11.8±0.3 MPa, much more negative than that of the two Asian junipers measured here, but within the same range of values measured in European and North American junipers. P50 was more negative with mean annual temperature and with aridity index of the driest quarter at both species (climatic conditions at the entire distribution range) and site levels. We did not find the relationships generally found in conifers between the properties of xylem pit membrane and vulnerability to embolism, nor with the overall aridity of the environment. To the best of our knowledge, our observations identify J. drupacea as the most drought-tolerant tree species in Asia.

Hydraulic conductivity regulates tree growth and drought resistance in semi-arid mixed forests of northern China

With the intensification of climate warming, drought has become increasingly severe. Drought seriously impacts tree growth and may even result in tree mortality. However, our understanding of how the hydraulic structure of xylem in different tree species regulates growth and drought resistance remains incomplete. Here, we collected tree-ring samples from three semi-arid natural Chinese pine (Pinus tabuliformis)-broadleaf mixed forests in northern China. We selected Chinese pine (non-porous wood), white birch (Betula platyphylla, diffuse-porous wood), and Liaodong oak (Quercus liaotungensis, ring-porous wood) as target tree species. Using dendrochronology and wood anatomy methods, we evaluated interspecies differences in tree growth, climate sensitivity, and drought resistance, and analyzed the relationships between tree growth, drought resistance, and theoretical xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity (Ks). Our findings revealed distinct differences in the hydraulic structure of xylem among these three tree species as well as their resilience to drought. Liaodong oak exhibited less sensitive to drought compared to Chinese pine and white birch. Meanwhile both Chinese pine and Liaodong oak demonstrated greater resistance to drought than white birch. The positive correlation between specific xylem hydraulic conductivity and both tree growth and drought resistance were observed for Chinese pine, but Liaodong oak was the opposite. This suggested that specific hydraulic conductivity of xylem cannot serve as a consistent or robust predictor of tree growth or drought resistance across different species. As climate warming intensifies, it is anticipated that white birch may experience severe and significant irreversible decline in growth, while Liaodong oak may exhibit the highest potential growth performance. Given the projected intensification of future warming trends along with more frequent extreme climate events, safeguarding biodiversity and productivity within semi-arid Chinese pine-broadleaf mixed forests may hinge on the prioritizing protection efforts for Chinese pine.

Direct characterization of deep soil water depletion reveals hydraulic adjustment of apple trees to edaphic changes

Deep soil water is important for trees to survive droughts in arid and semiarid regions, but often irreversibly decrease as tree age due to limitations in soil infiltration rates and precipitation. How adaptable is the hydraulic system of trees undergoing the depletion of deep soil moisture reserves? To answer this question, we examined 12 traits characterizing the hydraulic structure of apple tree branches along a plantation age gradient (7 - 26 years) under uniform soil and climatic conditions. We found that almost all deep soil available water was consumed (reduced by up to 98%) as apple trees aged, as a result, the fraction of roots located in water deficit layers increased by up to 70%. Reduced water availability in deep soil significantly increased xylem embolism resistance (P50) by 8%, without altering xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity, vessel diameter, or vessel density. A distinct adaptive response to permanently reduced deep soil water availability seems to occur primarily by increasing tree hydraulic safety with no reductions in hydraulic efficiency, through which mechanism trees may acclimatize to deep soil water reduction.

Xylem adjustment and growth response of early- and late-successional tree species to rapid warming

Climate changes have dramatically affected forest succession. However, how trees at different successional stages respond to climate warming is unclear in the subtropics. Here, we compared the radial growth (RW) and xylem features of the early-successional stage Castanea mollissima and late-successional stage Quercus fabri in subtropical forests and assessed their response to climate changes. All parameters, including RW, number of vessels (VN), vessel density (VD), mean (MVA) and total (TVA) vessel area, percentage of conductive area within xylem (RCTA), theoretical (Kh) and xylem-specific (Ks) hydraulic conductivity, except for MVA of C. mollissima were significantly higher than those of Q. fabri. During the drought period, a notable adverse correlation between two cluster parameters of Q. fabri, associated with hydraulic safety and efficiency, suggested a pronounced hydraulic trade-off in Q. fabri under drought conditions. Castanea mollissima was more sensitive to climate and more prone to hydraulic failure than Q. fabri. Temperatures and moisture conditions positively and negatively affected the hydraulic efficiency-related parameters of C. mollissima. Moisture conditions in the previous summer and winter were significantly negatively and positively related to the radial growth of both species. The impact of generalized warming was not evident due to variations in hydraulic strategies and species characteristics, trade-offs between non-growing and growing season climates, and specific competition. If climate warming continues, C. mollissima growth will probably significantly decline due to the increasing risk of hydraulic failure. Warming may accelerate species replacement and forest succession in the study area by changing their lifespans and competitive relationships.

No effect of snow on shrub xylem traits: Insights from a snow-manipulation experiment on Disko Island, Greenland

Widespread shrubification across the Arctic has been generally attributed to increasing air temperatures, but responses vary across species and sites. Wood structures related to the plant hydraulic architecture may respond to local environmental conditions and potentially impact shrub growth, but these relationships remain understudied. Using methods of dendroanatomy, we analysed shrub ring width (RW) and xylem anatomical traits of 80 individuals of Salix glauca L. and Betula nana L. at a snow manipulation experiment in Western Greenland. We assessed how their responses differed between treatments (increased versus ambient snow depth) and soil moisture regimes (wet and dry). Despite an increase in snow depth due to snow fences (28–39 %), neither RW nor anatomical traits in either species showed significant responses to this increase. In contrast, irrespective of the snow treatment, the xylem specific hydraulic conductivity (Ks) and earlywood vessel size (LA95) for the study period were larger in S. glauca (p < 0.1, p < 0.01) and B. nana (p < 0.01, p < 0.001) at the wet than the dry site, while both species had larger vessel groups at the dry than the wet site (p < 0.01). RW of B. nana was higher at the wet site (p < 0.01), but no differences were observed for S. glauca. Additionally, B. nana Ks and LA95 showed different trends over the study period, with decreases observed at the dry site (p < 0.001), while for other responses no difference was observed. Our results indicate that, taking into account ontogenetic and allometric trends, hydraulic related xylem traits of both species, along with B. nana growth, were influenced by soil moisture. These findings suggest that soil moisture regime, but not snow cover, may determine xylem responses to future climate change and thus add to the heterogeneity of Arctic shrub dynamics, though more long-term species- and site- specific studies are needed.

The phenotypic and genetic effects of drought-induced stress on wood specific conductivity and anatomical properties in white spruce seedlings, and relationships with growth and wood density.

Drought frequency and intensity are projected to increase with climate change, thus amplifying stress on forest trees. Resilience to drought implicates physiological traits such as xylem conductivity and wood anatomical traits, which are related to growth and wood density. Integrating drought-stress response traits at the juvenile stage into breeding criteria could help promote the survival of planted seedlings under current and future climate and thus, improve plantation success. We assessed in greenhouse the influence of drought-induced stress on 600 two-year-old white spruce (Picea glauca) seedlings from 25 clonal lines after two consecutive growing seasons. Three levels of drought-induced stress were applied: control, moderate and severe. Seedlings were also planted at a 45° angle to clearly separate compression from normal wood. We looked at the phenotypic and genetic effects of drought stress on xylem specific hydraulic conductivity, lumen diameter, tracheid diameter and length, and the number of pits per tracheid in the normal wood. We detected no significant effects of drought stress except for tracheid length, which decreased with increasing drought stress. We found low to high estimates of trait heritability, which generally decreased with increasing drought stress. Genetic correlations were higher than phenotypic correlations for all treatments. Specific conductivity was genetically highly correlated positively with lumen diameter and tracheid length under all treatments. Tracheid length and diameter were always negatively correlated genetically, indicating a trade-off in resource allocation. Moderate to high genetic correlations sometimes in opposite direction were observed between physico-anatomical and productivity traits, also indicating trade-offs. A large variation was observed among clones for all physico-anatomical traits, but clonal ranks were generally stable between control and drought-induced treatments. Our results indicate the possibility of early screening of genetic material for desirable wood anatomical attributes under normal growing conditions, thus allowing to improve the drought resilience of young trees.

Leaf nitrogen and phosphorus resorption efficiencies are related to drought resistance across woody species in a Chinese savanna.

Leaf nutrient resorption and drought resistance are crucial for the growth and survival of plants. However, our understanding of the relationships between leaf nutrient resorption and plant drought resistance is still limited. In this study, we investigated the nitrogen and phosphorus resorption efficiencies (NRE and PRE), leaf structural traits, leaf osmotic potential at full hydration (Ψosm), xylem water potential at 50% loss of xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity (P50) and seasonal minimum water potential (Ψmin) for 18 shrub and tree species in a semiarid savanna ecosystem, in Southwest China. Our results showed that NRE and PRE exhibited trade-off against drought resistance traits (Ψosm and P50) across woody species. Moreover, this relationship was modulated by leaf structural investment. Species with low structural investment (e.g., leaf mass per area, leaf dry mass content and leaf construction cost [LCC]) tend to have high NRE and PRE, while those with high LCCs show high drought resistance, showing more negative Ψosm and P50.These results indicate that species with a lower leaf structural investment may have a greater need to recycle their nutrients, thus exhibiting higher nutrient resorption efficiencies, and vice versa. In conclusion, nutrient resorption efficiency may be a crucial adaptation strategy for coexisting plants in semiarid ecosystems, highlighting the importance of understanding the complex relationships between nutrient cycling and plant survival strategies.

The Impact of Urbanization on Tree Growth and Xylem Anatomical Characteristics.

In the context of the intensification of global urbanization, how urbanization (urban heat island effect and air pollution) affects urban tree growth is not fully understood. In this paper, the radial growth and xylem anatomical characteristics of three different tree species (Quercus mongolica, Fraxinus mandshurica, and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) in urban and rural areas of Harbin were compared by means of tree-ring anatomy. The results showed that there were significant differences in the growth of both broadleaf trees and conifers between urban and rural areas. The vessel number, cumulative area of vessels, and theoretical hydraulic conductivity of all tree species in rural areas were higher than those in urban areas, indicating that urbanization may have the effect of slowing down growth. However, broadleaf trees in urban areas had higher vessel density and a greater percentage of a conductive area within xylem and theoretical xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity. The thickness of cell walls and cell wall reinforcement index of P. sylvestris var. mongolica were strongly reduced by air pollution, implying that it may be more sensitive to urbanization. Compared to Q. mongolica, F. mandshurica showed less sensitivity to urbanization. Warming and drying climate in Harbin may be an important factor affecting tree growth.

Potassium fertilization enhances xylem plasticity and growth recovery of Eucalyptus grandis trees in response to drastic changes in water availability

Most Eucalyptus plantations in Brazil are located in regions currently experiencing periods of water shortage, where fertilizers such as potassium (K) are intensively used to achieve high productivity. In a changing environment, improving our understanding of the effects of K nutrition on tree growth rates and xylem plasticity across tree ages as a function of climate is crucial for forest management. The objective of this study was to gain insight into the interactive effects of K fertilization, water availability, and tree age on stem growth and changes in xylem traits of E. grandis trees over a full rotation. Changes in growth and xylem traits in response to a severe drought that occurred in 2014 were also studied. An experimental plantation of E. grandis trees was established in São Paulo, Brazil and monitored over a full 6-year rotation period. The experiment consisted of a split-plot design with two water supply regimes (37 % throughfall reduction vs undisturbed throughfall) and two fertilization regimes (K supply vs control). Basal area increment (BAI) was monitored using band dendrometers at 14-day intervals from 1 to 6 years after planting. Xylem traits including wood density (WD), cell wall fraction (CWF), cell density (CDen), theoretical xylem specific hydraulic conductivity (Kst), vessel diameter (VD), vessel density (VDen), vessel area (VA), and the vulnerability index (VI) were measured in 6-month periods (rainy and dry seasons) throughout the rotation. K fertilization increased BAI by a factor of 3 in plots where throughfall was not disturbed but led to an interruption of tree growth during the severe drought in 2014. The growth patterns showed a positive effect of K for growth recovery following drought. Throughfall reduction affected growth only in K-fertilized trees and up to 30 months of age. K fertilization also increased changes in xylem traits in response to drought in E. grandis trees. The main changes occurred in vessel traits, with a 53 % decrease in Kst during the drought but recovery was rapid after the first rainfall events. High plasticity was also observed for WD, CWF, CDen, and VI.

Comparative Ecophysiology of Hybrid Wood Fern Species

Premise of research. Polyploidy and hybridization are prevalent and widespread phenomena in plants. The genetic consequences of genome duplication are numerous, but we understand very little about the comparative ecology of polyploids. In particular, the ways in which hybrid and polyploid offspring differ in ecology relative to their parents and relatives are poorly known. Among angiosperms, the triploid bridge is hypothesized to accrue some marginal fitness benefit to parent species from mostly sterile hybrid offspring. Because of the complexities of the fern life cycle, involving two free-living life stages, the ability to backcross via a triploid bridge should be more limited. If the triploid sporophyte offspring provide no fitness benefit to parents via subsequent generations, this raises the question about whether triploids further compete with parents by occupying similar ecological niches. We investigated comparative ecophysiology across light and wetness gradients of five members of the hybrid wood fern complex, Dryopteris. Methodology. We selected two related triads. Each triad consisted of a triploid and its diploid and tetraploid progenitor species: the D. × triploidea (3n) triad, with the parents D. carthusiana (4n) and D. intermedia (2n), and the D. × bootii (3n) triad, with the parents D. cristata (4n) and D. intermedia (2n). We sampled the temperature and relative humidity, population abundance and relative frequency, photosynthetic parameters, and hydraulic conductivity of populations to examine the extent of shared ecological niche space. Pivotal results. We found that triploids varied in habitat space relative to their parents. In the case of the triploid D. × bootii, this taxon occupied habitats similar to those of its parents at similar abundances and frequencies. In the case of D. × triploidea, the hybrid occurred across a more diverse range of habitats, which was more similar to its diploid parent. In both triads, the triploid’s photosynthetic rate was intermediate between those of its parents, and the majority of the photosynthetic parameters were similar to those of the parents. There were some differences in hydraulic conductivity: xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity of the triploid D. × bootii was significantly higher than that of its diploid parent. Conclusions. Our results show that related triploids, diploids, and tetraploids substantially overlap in morphological and physiological niche space. The high relative frequency of triploids in habitats and the lack of clear niche partitioning within triads suggest that in addition to not contributing to parental reproductive fitness, the triploids could also negatively impact their progenitors by potentially competing for space and light resources in similar ways.

Growth differential related to wood structure and function of Eucalyptus spp. clones adapted to seasonal drought stress

Aim of the study: To evaluate the growth performance, wood density and anatomical features of four drought-tolerant Eucalyptus spp. clones, at 4 years, and to examine the relationships between these characteristics and some functional parameters. Area of study: The analyzed trees were from a clonal test installed in a region characterized by seasonal drought stress in central-western Brazil. Methods: Trees were felled, followed by obtaining dendrometric parameters and wood disk sampling to determine wood bulk density by x-ray densitometry, and morphometric parameters of fibers and vessels in order to evaluate the xylem hydraulic architecture. Lumen fraction (F), vessel composition (S) and hydraulic conductivity (Ks) were estimated. Results: Clone D (E. urophylla x E grandis) presented the highest growth rates, which was related to anatomical characteristics such as low relative frequency of wide vessels. High theoretical Ks does not necessarily imply higher growth rates and were related to lower wood densities. It is possible to infer that the better xylem adjustability of Eucalyptus trees in response to drought stress conditions is associated with increased vessel composition to the detriment of higher hydraulic conductivity. Research highlights: Vessel composition showed a greater variation among Eucalyptus genotypes and was positively associated with growth performance. HYDRAULICS OF PINUS (SUBSECTION PONDEROSAE) POPULATIONS ACROSS AN ELEVATION GRADIENT IN THE SANTA CATALINA MOUNTAINS OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA

The ability of plants to tolerate and recover from periodic water stress affects their competitive ability, survival, and distribution, leading to shifts in plant communities as environmental conditions change. We investigated the hydraulic traits of two closely related Pinus taxa to assess population and taxonomic variability in plant hydraulic traits. We hypothesized that traits would vary with elevation but exhibit similar traits where taxa co-occurred. We measured predawn and midday leaf pressure potential (Ψp) across three seasons, xylem specific hydraulic conductivity (Ks), and vulnerability to xylem embolism (P50). These were measured on Pinus ponderosa var. brachyptera (Engelm.) Lemmon that occurred at a high elevation site (2770 m), P. arizonica Engelm. at a low elevation site (2135 m), and both species where they co-occurred at the mid-elevation site (2475 m) in the Santa Catalina Mountains of southern Arizona. Plants from the high elevation site had the least negative Ψp and the highest Ks. The two taxa differed from one another when compared between the high and low elevation sites, but they were not different where they co-occurred. The two Pinus taxa show plasticity in their hydraulic traits across sites. Conditions across the elevational gradient appear to lead to a convergent solution in hydraulic traits for these taxa where their ranges overlap but differences in traits where they do not overlap. Increasing aridity in the region could lead to shifts in suitable habitat, reduced water transport ability at range margins, and shifts in population distributions.

Persistent decay of fresh xylem hydraulic conductivity varies with pressure gradient and marks plant responses to injury.

Defining plant hydraulic traits is central to the quantification of ecohydrological processes ranging from land-atmosphere interactions, to tree mortality and water-carbon budgets. A key plant trait is the xylem specific hydraulic conductivity (Kx ), that describes the plant's vascular system capacity to transport water. While xylem's vessels and tracheids are dead upon maturity, the xylem is neither inert nor deadwood, various components of the sapwood and surrounding tissue remaining alive and functional. Moreover, the established definition of Kx assumes linear relations between water flux and pressure gradient by tacitly considering the xylem as a "passive conduit". Here, we re-examine this notion of an inert xylem by systematically characterizing xylem flow in several woody plants using Kx measurements under constant and cyclic pressure gradients. Results show a temporal and pressure gradient dependence of Kx . Additionally, microscopic features in "living branches" are irreversibly modified upon drying of the xylem, thus differentiating the macroscopic definition of Kx for living and dead xylem. The findings highlight the picture of the xylem as a complex and delicate conductive system whose hydraulic behaviour transcends a passive gradient-based flow. The study sheds new light on xylem conceptualization, conductivity measurement protocols, in situ long-distance water transport and ecosystem modelling.

Responses of functional traits to seven-year nitrogen addition in two tree species: coordination of hydraulics, gas exchange and carbon reserves.

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has been observed to impact plant structure and functional traits in terrestrial ecosystems. Although the effect of N deposition on plant water use has been well-evaluated in laboratories and in experimental forests, the linkages between water and carbon relations under N deposition are unclear. Here, we report on hydraulics, gas exchange and carbon reserves of two broad-leaved tree species (Quercus mongolica and Fraxinus mandshurica) in mature temperate forests after a seven-year experiment with different levels of N addition (control (CK), low (23kgNha-1yr-1), medium (46kgNha-1yr-1) and high (69kgNha-1yr-1)). We investigated variation in hydraulic traits (xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity (Ks), native percentage loss of conductivity (PLC) and leaf water potential), xylem anatomy (vessel diameter and density), gas exchange (maximum net photosynthesis rate and stomatal conductance) and carbon reserves (soluble sugars, starch and total nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC)) with different N addition levels. We found that medium N addition significantly increased Ks and vessel diameter compared to control, but accompanied increasing PLC and decreasing leaf water potential, suggesting that N addition results in a greater hydraulic efficiency and higher risk of embolism. N addition promoted photosynthetic capacity via increasing foliar N concentration but did not change stomatal conductance. In addition, we found increase in foliar soluble sugar concentration and decrease in starch concentration with N addition, and positive correlations between hydraulic traits (vessel diameter and PLC) and soluble sugars. These coupled responses of tree hydraulics and carbon metabolism are consistent with a regulatory role of carbohydrates in maintaining hydraulic integrity. Our study provides an important insight into the relationship of plant water transport and carbon dynamics under increasing N deposition.

Variation in xylem characteristics of botanical races of Persea americana and their potential influence on susceptibility to the pathogen Raffaelea lauricola

Avocado (Persea americana), an important fruit crop, is under threat from an invasive disease, laurel wilt. The pathogen, Raffaelea lauricola, spreads rapidly in the xylem of infected trees and causes a lethal vascular wilt. A previous study showed that variation in susceptibility to the disease exists among different races of avocado, with the West Indian race being most susceptible. To help elucidate potential explanations for differences in susceptibility, xylem characteristics were examined for fourteen avocado cultivars from the Guatemalan, Mexican, and West Indian botanical races. Samples of each cultivar were assessed for vessel size, vessel density, vessel aggregation, and xylem-specific potential hydraulic conductivity. The West Indian race had significantly greater mean vessel diameters, mean maximum vessel diameters, and xylem-specific potential hydraulic conductivities than the Guatemalan and Mexican races (p < 0.05), which in turn did not differ for any of these variables (p > 0.05). There were no significant differences among the races for vessel aggregation or vessel density. Cultivars of the Mexican and Guatemalan races generally had smaller mean vessel diameters, mean maximum vessel diameters, and mean xylem-specific potential hydraulic conductivities than the West Indian race; however, there was considerable variation among cultivars of the Mexican race. Statistically significant differences in vessel grouping indices and vessel solitary fractions were evident among some cultivars but to lesser extents than were found for vessel size. This study indicates that larger vessel diameters and greater potential hydraulic conductivities exist in the West Indian, compared with the Guatemalan and Mexican races. We suggest that these attributes may be contributing factors in the greater susceptibility to laurel wilt that is evident in the West Indian race.

Xylem anatomy needs to change, so that conductivity can stay the same: xylem adjustments across elevation and latitude in Nothofagus pumilio.

Plants have the potential to adjust the configuration of their hydraulic system to maintain its function across spatial and temporal gradients. Species with wide environmental niches provide an ideal framework to assess intraspecific xylem adjustments to contrasting climates. We aimed to assess how xylem structure in the widespread species Nothofagus pumilio varies across combined gradients of temperature and moisture, and to what extent within-individual variation contributes to population responses across environmental gradients. We characterized xylem configuration in branches of N. pumilio trees at five sites across an 18° latitudinal gradient in the Chilean Andes, sampling at four elevations per site. We measured vessel area, vessel density and the degree of vessel grouping. We also obtained vessel diameter distributions and estimated the xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity. Xylem traits were studied in the last five growth rings to account for within-individual variation. Xylem traits responded to changes in temperature and moisture, but also to their combination. Reductions in vessel diameter and increases in vessel density suggested increased safety levels with lower temperatures at higher elevation. Vessel grouping also increased under cold and dry conditions, but changes in vessel diameter distributions across the elevational gradient were site-specific. Interestingly, the estimated xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity remained constant across elevation and latitude, and an overwhelming proportion of the variance of xylem traits was due to within-individual responses to year-to-year climatic fluctuations, rather than to site conditions. Despite conspicuous adjustments, xylem traits were coordinated to maintain a constant hydraulic function under a wide range of conditions. This, combined with the within-individual capacity for responding to year-to-year climatic variations, may have the potential to increase forest resilience against future environmental changes.

Growing-season temperature and precipitation are independent drivers of global variation in xylem hydraulic conductivity.

Stem xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity (KS ) represents the potential for plant water transport normalized by xylem cross section, length, and driving force. Variation in KS has implications for plant transpiration and photosynthesis, growth and survival, and also the geographic distribution of species. Clarifying the global-scale patterns of KS and its major drivers is needed to achieve a better understanding of how plants adapt to different environmental conditions, particularly under climate change scenarios. Here, we compiled a xylem hydraulics dataset with 1,186 species-at-site combinations (975 woody species representing 146 families, from 199 sites worldwide), and investigated how KS varied with climatic variables, plant functional types, and biomes. Growing-season temperature and growing-season precipitation drove global variation in KS independently. Both the mean and the variation in KS were highest in the warm and wet tropical regions, and lower in cold and dry regions, such as tundra and desert biomes. Our results suggest that future warming and redistribution of seasonal precipitation may have a significant impact on species functional diversity, and is likely to be particularly important in regions becoming warmer or drier, such as high latitudes. This highlights an important role for KS in predicting shifts in community composition in the face of climate change.

Fully exposed canopy tree and liana branches in a tropical forest differ in mechanical traits but are similar in hydraulic traits.

Large lianas and trees in the forest canopy are challenged by hydraulic and mechanical failures and need to balance hydraulic conductivity, hydraulic safety and mechanical safety. Our study integrates these functions in canopy branches to understand the performance of canopy trees and lianas, and their difference. We sampled and measured branches from 22 species at a canopy crane in the tropical forest at Xishuangbanna, SW China. We quantified the hydraulic conductivity from the xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity (KS), hydraulic safety from the cavitation resistance (P50) and mechanical safety from the modulus of rupture (MOR) to evaluate trade-offs and differences between lianas and trees. We also measured a number of anatomical features that may influence these three functional traits. Our results suggest the following: trade-offs between hydraulic conductivity, hydraulic safety and mechanical safety are weak or absent; liana branches better resist external mechanical forces (higher MOR) than tree branches; and liana and tree branches were similar in hydraulic performance (KS and P50). The anatomical features underlying KS, P50 and MOR may differ between lianas and trees. We conclude that canopy branches of lianas and trees diverged in mechanical design due to fundamental differences in wood formation, but converged in hydraulic design.

Disentangling the effects of disturbance, climate and tree age on xylem hydraulic conductivity of Betula pendula.

The increasing frequency of disturbances in temperate forests is responsible for the greater numbers of trees with mechanically damaged cambial zones. Adjustment of wood anatomical structure to balance between safe and efficient water conductivity is one mechanism trees employ to cope with mechanical damage. The relative role of disturbances, tree age and climate in shaping xylem conduits and affecting xylem hydraulic conductivity remains unknown. We performed an experiment with five different mechanical treatments simulating natural disturbances of juvenile Betula pendula trees (stem scarring, tilting, decapitation, root exposure and stem-base burial). After 3 years, trees were cut down, conduit size and density were measured, and specific hydraulic conductivity of each tree ring was calculated. Between-tree and between-year variability in xylem conductivity was decomposed into effects of tree age, climate and disturbances using linear mixed-effects models. Xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity decreased significantly after treatment in decapitated, tilted and scarred trees. In the last treatment, wood anatomical adjustment was restricted to the area next to the callus tissue zone; in contrast, specific hydraulic conductivity declined over the entire stem circumference after tilting or decapitation. The response of trees with buried stems and exposed roots was generally weak. The overall effect of disturbances on inter-annual variability of wood anatomical structure was greater than the contribution of tree age and climate. The results indicate that disturbances are important drivers of xylem hydraulic conductivity. Expected increases in the frequency and intensity of disturbances may alter the theoretical capacity of forest stands for water conductance with a feedback to climate.

Hydraulic anatomy affects genotypic variation in plant water use and shows differential organ specific plasticity to drought in Sorghum bicolor

Genotypic variability and plasticity in hydraulic anatomy are not well-understood in herbaceous monocots. In this study, we used Sorghum bicolor, a monocotyledonous, tropical grass model, to understand whether differential plant water use is associated with xylem anatomy and if whole-plant xylem anatomy responds to water stress, justifying differential genotypic sensitivity to drought. In a greenhouse environment, we studied four sorghum genotypes that are known to genetically differ in growth and exhibit differential sensitivity to drought. Under well-watered scenario, transpiration variability and plant growth traits correlated with xylem anatomical traits at both the leaf and stem level, including xylem area and predicted xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity. High water use genotypes had inherently higher hydraulic capacity, but under drought, their transpiration declined at higher fractions of transpirable soil water (FTSW) and they showed greater plasticity in hydraulic anatomy. However, lower FTSW thresholds and modest anatomical changes were identified in the low water use genotypes with inherently lower hydraulic conductivity. Drought, induced modular phenotypic plasticity in hydraulic anatomy, whereby plasticity in leaf xylem traits was remarkably higher than stem xylem, while root xylem showed a reverse nature of vascular modification. Xylem traits were in agreement with phloem anatomy, irrespective of water regime. Our study indicates that hydraulic anatomy can be critical for herbaceous monocots in determining limits to plant water use and genotypic response to drought with implications on whole-plant functions and habitat ecology.
