We have studied the magnetic properties of Ho2Co17−xSix compounds (x≤3) by means of magnetic measurements and X-ray diffraction on magnetically aligned powders. The Curie temperature and the spontaneous moment decrease strongly with increasing Si concentration. We have constructed the magnetic phase diagram for the Ho2Co17−xSix system. The easy magnetization direction is parallel to the c-axis in an extended temperature region below the Curie temperature. A spin–reorientation transition takes place at lower temperatures, leading to an easy magnetization direction perpendicular to the c-axis. In the Ho2Co17 compound, the spin–reorientation transition occurs at 1005 K.
