Reasoning about Structural Integrity Constraints for XML

In order to efficiently optimize XML path expression queries,this paper gives a system of structural integrity constraints for XML(XSICs).The pattern system provides effective means to specify the structural relationships between different paths or nodes in form of path implication,path concurrence and path mutual-exclusion,element obligatory inclusion,element exclusive inclusion.On the basis of this,the implication and consistency problems of XSICs are studied.Firstly,the technique of constraint rewriting is introduced to rewrite all kinds of constraints into path constraints.Secondly,a set of inference rules for path implication constraints is developed.Finally,the paper proves the completeness of these inference rules,and gives the consistency determinant method of XSICs by using the path implication closure.

Query processing strategy of XML path expression based on schema

To make effective use of path information and reduce the number of joint operations,the authors labeled each element or attribute in DTD with a binary prefix code,and introduced the DTD code into the numbering scheme for XML documents. Based on this,path expression queries were decomposed into a series of query fragments. Then these query fragments were efficiently evaluated by using a bit-wise operation of the binary prefix codes. Finally,the results of the query fragments were composed by structural joint. The experimental results show that the proposed approach is effective and efficient.

XML 구조 문맥을 사용한 효율적인 경로 표현식 조인 알고리즘

As a standard query language to search XML data, XQuery and XPath were proposed by W3C. By widely using XQuery and XPath languages, recent researches focus on the development of query processing algorithm and data structure for efficiently processing XML query with the enormous XML database system. Recently, when processing XML path expressions, the concept of the structural join which may determine the structural relationship between XML elements, e.g., ancestor-descendant or parent-child, has been one of the dominant XPath processing mechanisms. However, structural joins which frequently occur in XPath query processing require high cost. In this paper, we propose a new structural join algorithm, called SISJ, based on our structured index, called SI, in order to process XPath queries efficiently. Experimental results show that our algorithm performs marginally better than previous ones. However, in the case of high recursive documents, it performed more than 30% by the pruning feature of the proposed method.

Index structures for matching XML twigs using relational query processors

Various index structures have been proposed to speed up the evaluation of XML path expressions. However, existing XML path indices suffer from at least one of three limitations: they focus only on indexing the structure (relying on a separate index for node content), they are useful only for simple path expressions such as root-to-leaf paths, or they cannot be tightly integrated with a relational query processor. Moreover, there is no unified framework to compare these index structures. In this paper, we present a framework defining a family of index structures that includes most existing XML path indices. We also propose two novel index structures in this family, with different space–time tradeoffs, that are effective for the evaluation of XML branching path expressions (i.e., twigs) with value conditions. We also show how this family of index structures can be implemented using the access methods of the underlying relational database system. Finally, we present an experimental evaluation that shows the performance tradeoff between index space and matching time. The experimental results show that our novel indices achieve orders of magnitude improvement in performance for evaluating twig queries, albeit at a higher space cost, over the use of previously proposed XML path indices that can be tightly integrated with a relational query processor.

실체뷰 캐쉬 기법을 이용한 XML 질의 처리 시스템의 구현

Recently, caching for the database-backed web applications has received much attention. The results of frequent queries could be cached for repeated reuse or for efficient processing of the relevant queries. Since the emergence of XML as a standard for data exchange on the web, today`s web applications are to retrieve information from the remote XML sources across the network, and thus it is desirable to maintain the XML query results in the cache for the web applications. In this paper, we describe implementation of an XML query processing system that supports cache-answerability of XML queries, and evaluate its performance. XML path expression, which is one of the core features of XML query languages including XQuery, XPath, and XQL was considered as the XML query. Their result is maintained as an XML materialized view in the XML cache. The algorithms to rewrite the given XML path expression using its relevant materialized view proposed in [13] were implemented with RDBMS as XML store. The major issues of implementation are described in detail. The results of performance experiments conducted with the implemented system showed effectiveness of cache-answerability of XML queries. Comparison with previous research in terms of performance is also Provided.

XML 실체뷰를 이용한 XML 질의 처리 : 경로 표현식의 분할 처리 및 결과 통합

웹 상에서 XML 문서의 수요가 증가함에 따라 XML 문서를 자원으로 갖는 웹 서비스 응용들이 증가하고 있다. 이들 웹 서비스 응용에서 질의 처리 시 성능 향상을 위해 XML 데이타에 대한 뷰 메커니즘을 고려할 수 있다. XML 질의 결과를 실체뷰로 유지하고, 하부 XML 문서에 대한 원래의 질의를 관련된 실체뷰에 대한 질의로 변환하여 수행한다면 질의 응답시간을 줄일 수 있을 것이다. 실체뷰를 이용한 질의 처리의 유형으로는 <TEX>$\circled1$</TEX> 실체뷰로부터 원하는 결과를 모두 얻을 수 있는 유형과 <TEX>$\circled2$</TEX> 질의 결과의 일부는 실체뷰에 존재하지만 일부는 하부 XML 문서로 부터 검색해야 하는 유형이 있다. 본 논문에서는 두 번째 유형에 대하여 연구한다. 본 논문의 질의는 여러 XML 질의어들이 갖는 핵심적인 기능 중 하나인 XML 경로 표현식이다. 본 논문에서는 먼저, XML 저장소 내 하부 XML 문서들로부터 도출된 XML 실체뷰의 저장 구조를 제시 한 후, 주어진 XML 질의를 실체뷰에 대한 질의와 하부 데이타에 대한 질의로 분할하는 알고리즘과 분할 질의의 결과를 통합하는 알고리즘을 제시한다. 그리고, 성능 평가를 통하여 실체뷰를 이용한 질의 분할 처리가 성능 향상을 가져오는 조건을 구한다. As demand of XML documents in the Web increases, Web service applications that manage XML documents as their resource are increasing. The view mechanism for XML data could be considered for effective in query processing in these Web service applications. If the XML query results are maintained as XML materialized views and their relevant XML query is processed using them, the query response time could be reduced. There are two types of processing an in path expression, which is one of the core features of XML query languages, using XML materialized views. One is the type where the complete query result is obtained from the materialized view, and the other is the type where some of the result is obtained from the materialized view and the rest is from the underlying XML documents. In this paper, we investigate the second type. An XML query in this paper is an XML path expression which is one of the core features of XML query languages. We first describe the storage structures of the XML materialized views derived from the underlying XML documents in the XML repository. Then, we propose the algorithms to decompose a given XML query into the subquery against the materialized view and the subquery against the underlying XML documents, and to integrate the results of these subqueries. Through performance evaluation, we figure out the condition under which our XML query decomposition using materialized views is more effective than the conventional processing.
