Ionic liquid structure, dynamics, and electrosorption in carbon electrodes with bimodal pores and heterogeneous surfaces

We investigate the aggregation, diffusion, and resulting electrochemical behavior of ionic liquids inside carbon electrodes with complex pore architectures and surface chemistries. Carbide-derived carbons (CDCs) with bimodal porosities and defunctionalized or oxidized electrode surfaces served as model electrode materials. Our goal was to obtain a fundamental understanding of room-temperature ionic liquid ion orientation, mobility, and electrosorption behavior. Neat 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide confined in CDCs was studied using an integrated experimental and modeling approach, consisting of quasielastic neutron scattering, small-angle neutron scattering, X-ray pair distribution function analysis, and electrochemical measurements, which were combined with molecular dynamics simulations. Our analysis shows that surface oxygen groups increase the diffusion of confined electrolytes. Consequently, the ions become more than twice as mobile in oxygen-rich pores. Although greater self-diffusion of ions translates into higher electrochemical mobilities in oxidized pores, bulk-like behavior of ions dominates in the larger mesopores and increases the overall capacitance in defunctionalized pores. Experimental results highlight strong confinement and surface effects of carbon electrodes on electrolyte behavior, and molecular dynamics simulations yield insight into diffusion and capacitance differences in specific pore regions. We demonstrate the significance of surface defects on electrosorption dynamics of complex electrolytes in hierarchical pore architectures of supercapacitor electrodes.

Domain Structures of Ni and NiFe (Oxy)Hydroxide Oxygen-Evolution Catalysts from X-ray Pair Distribution Function Analysis

Ni–Fe (oxy)hydroxides, Ni(1–z)FezOxHy, are among the fastest-known water oxidation catalysts in alkaline media on a per-cation basis. At current densities relevant for electrolysis (e.g., >0.5 A/cm–2), mass and electron transport through catalyst films with high mass loading are critical and depend substantially on the extended and intermediate catalyst architecture. Here we use X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analysis to determine the intermediate nanostructures of electrodeposited Ni(1–z)FezOxHy films. We report the effects of electrodeposition technique (pulsed versus continuous), electrochemical cycling, and Fe content on the structure of the catalyst film. The PDF patterns for Ni(1–z)FezOxHy films are best simulated by model structures consisting of brucite-like β-Ni(OH)2 fragments 1 to 3 layers in thickness. Pair distribution function analysis applied to decahedral gold nanoparticles

The five-fold symmetry of face-centered cubic (fcc) derived nanoparticles is inconsistent with the translational symmetry of a Bravais lattice and generally explained by multiple twinning of a tetrahedral subunit about a (joint) symmetry axis, with or without structural modification to the fcc motif. Unlike in bulk materials, five-fold twinning in cubic nanoparticles is common and strongly affects their structural, chemical, and electronic properties. To test and verify theoretical approaches, it is therefore pertinent that the local structural features of such materials can be fully characterized. The small size of nanoparticles severely limits the application of traditional analysis techniques, such as Bragg diffraction. A complete description of the atomic arrangement in nanoparticles therefore requires a departure from the concept of translational symmetry, and prevents fully evaluating all the structural features experimentally. We describe how recent advances in instrumentation, together with the increasing power of computing, are shaping the development of alternative analysis methods of scattering data for nanostructures. We present the application of Debye scattering and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis towards modeling of the total scattering data for the example of decahedral gold nanoparticles. PDF measurements provide a statistical description of the pair correlations of atoms within a material, allowing one to evaluate the probability of finding two atoms within a given distance. We explored the sensitivity of existing synchrotron x-ray PDF instruments for distinguishing four different simple models for our gold nanoparticles: a multiply twinned fcc decahedron with either a single gap or multiple distributed gaps, a relaxed body-centered orthorhombic (bco) decahedron, and a hybrid decahedron. The data simulations of the models were then compared with experimental data from synchrotron x-ray total scattering. We present our experimentally derived atomistic models of the gold nanoparticles, with surprising results and a perspective on remaining challenges. Our findings provide evidence for the suitability of PDF analysis in the characterization of other nanosized particles that may have commercial applications.

Lithiation Thermodynamics and Kinetics of the TiO2 (B) Nanoparticles.

TiO2 (B) has attracted considerable attention in recent years because it exhibits the largest capacity among all studied titania polymorphs, with high rate performance for Li intercalation being achieved when this material is nanostructured. However, due to the complex nature of its lithiation mechanism and practical challenges in probing Li structure in nanostructured materials, a definitive understanding of the lithiation thermodynamics has yet to be established. A comprehensive mechanistic investigation of the TiO2 (B) nanoparticles is therefore presented using a combination of in situ/operando X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) and electrochemical techniques. The discharge begins with surface reactions in parallel with Li insertion into the subsurface of the nanoparticles. The Li bulk insertion starts with a single-phase reaction into the A2 site, a position adjacent to the b-channel. A change of the Li diffusion pathway from that along this open channel to that along the c-direction is likely to occur at the composition of Li0.25TiO2 until Li0.5TiO2 is attained, leading to a two-step A2-site incorporation with one step kinetically distinct from the other. Subsequent Li insertion involves the C' site, a position situated inside the channel, and follows a rapid two-phase reaction to form Li0.75TiO2. Due to the high diffusion barrier associated with the further lithiation, Li insertion into the A1 site, another position adjacent to the channel neighboring the A2 sites, is kinetically restricted. This study not only explores the lithiation reaction thermodynamics and mechanisms of nanoparticulate TiO2 (B) but also serves as a strong reference for future studies of the bulk phase, and for future calculations to study the Li transport properties of TiO2 (B).

Ion Dynamics and Electrosorption in Carbon Electrodes with Bimodal Porosities and Heterogeneous Interfaces

Electrochemical capacitors offer high reliabilities and power densities and demonstrate exceptional promise in a broad range of energy storage and management applications. However, research efforts have not, to date, properly explored the influence of electrode interfaces’ heterogeneity and disorder on charge storage and dynamics of electrosorbed ions. Surface functional groups and structural carbon defects contribute quantum capacitance.[1] Specific surface functional groups, which must appropriately match the chemistries of electrosorbed ions, develop favorable interfaces that reduce impedance and improve cyclabilities.[2] Finally, ionophilic surfaces draw ions away from pore surfaces and improve electrosorption during charge and discharge processes.[3] However, these effects strongly depend on electrode pore dimensions and behaviors of ions in confinement. Furthermore, standard materials characterization and electrochemical testing techniques cannot properly assess interactions at electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Subsequently, in-depth studies must rely on combinations of well-tailored experimental model systems, in-depth X-ray and neutron scattering techniques, and computational modeling to assess the influences of disordered interfaces on capacitance. Our research investigated the effect of electrode surface heterogeneity and disorder in complex pore architectures and electrolytes with large, non-idealized electrolytes. The approach used carbide-derived carbons (CDCs) synthesized from a Mo2C precursor at 800 °C. This electrode material offered bimodal pore size distributions (0.8 nm and 2.6 nm diameter pores, shown in Figure 1a), and 1300 °C vacuum annealing or 400 °C air oxidation yielded, respectively, defunctionalized or oxidized pore surfaces. We filled these pores with 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([OMIm+][TFSI-]) room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL). QENS measurements on these systems determined that the ions were significantly more mobile in oxidized pores than in defunctionalized pores (Figure 1b). A Cole-Cole model derived mobility information, and the RTIL diffusion coefficient in oxidized pores (2.71*10-10 m2 s-1) was more than twice as large as the one for the same RTIL in defunctionalized pores (1.05*10-10 m2 s-1) due to lower ion densities in oxidized pores. Electrochemical impedance analysis showed that electrochemically driven ionic mobility was higher in oxidized pores. On the other hand, defunctionalized pores demonstrated contained higher ion densities, and, subsequently, featured higher charge storage densities (Figure 3f). However, cyclic voltammograms suggested charge saturation and pore de-filling behaviors at low potentials; surface chemistry influenced the magnitude of this effect. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations showed similar strong affinities of oxidized surfaces for RTIL ions, which lowered their charge storage densities in 2.6 nm diameter pores. X-ray Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis showed differences in ion-ion correlations between bulk and confined states and further underscored the influence of pore and ion diameter on electrode/electrolyte interactions at heterogeneous interfaces. Cobalt Catalysts for Oxygen Evolution Studied By Operando Soft X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Recently, hydrogen production system by electrochemical water splitting has received attractive attention to realize a sustainable society that does not depend on fossil fuels. For commercial applications, the improvement of overall water splitting efficiency has been required by the development of highly active oxygen evolution electrocatalyst. In this situation, Nocera and colleagues reported that a cobalt oxide electrodeposited from a dilute Co2+ solution in a potassium phosphate buffered electrolyte (Co-KPi) is efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) [1]. The local structure of Co species in the Co-KPi catalyst was investigated by Co K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, and it was revealed that the Co-KPi is composed of nano-sized clusters with an edge-sharing CoO6 octahedral structure [2]. However, the detailed information about oxygen species in this electrocatalyst under working condition is not yet obtained enough. Thus, we have investigated the reaction mechanism by measuring operando O K-edge XAFS spectra for Co-KPiand similar catalysts under electrochemical potential control. Electrochemical O K-edge XAFS measurements using soft X-rays were performed with transmission mode at BL3U in the UVSOR Synchrotron, according to the previous works [3]. A home-made electrochemical cell was used with Au/Cr/SiC thin film substrates as working electrodes, a Pt counter electrode, and a Ag/AgCl reference electrode. Co-KPi electrocatalyst was electrodeposited on the Au/Cr/SiC working electrode in potassium phosphate buffered electrolyte containing Co(NO3)2. The O K-edge XAFS spectra for Co-KPi catalyst were taken under electrode potential control in potassium phosphate buffered electrolyte (Figure 1). At 0.0 V, an absorption peak attributed to oxygen species of CoOOH was detected around 531 eV. When the electrode potential was changed from 0.0 to 1.1 V, a new absorption peak assigned to oxygen species of CoO2 was observed around 529 eV, indicating that the part of CoOOH cluster was oxidized to CoO2 with the high-valent cobalt species (Co4+). Next, to discuss the relationship between spectroscopic result and catalytic activity, the O K-edge XAFS spectra were taken for the low active cobalt oxide catalysts with CoOOH local structures electrodeposited in a potassium acetate (Co-KOAc) or a potassium chloride (Co-KCl) aqueous solution. Then, the intensities of CoO2 species for Co-KOAc and Co-KCl were much lower than that for Co-KPi. Electric field dependent local structure of (KxNa1−x)0.5Bi0.5TiO3

The in situ X-ray Pair Distribution Function (PDF) characterisation technique has been used to study the behaviour of (Kx Na1-x)0.5 Bi0.5 TiO3, as a function of electric field. As opposed to conventional X-ray Bragg diffraction techniques, PDF is sensitive to local atomic displacements, detecting local structural changes at the Angstrom to nanometre scale. Several field-dependent ordering mechanisms can be observed in x = 0.15, 0.18 and at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition x = 0.20. X-ray total scattering shows suppression of diffuse scattering with increasing electric field amplitude, indicative of an increase in structural ordering. Analysis of PDF peaks in the 3-4 A range shows ordering of Bi-Ti distances parallel to the applied electric field, illustrated by peak amplitude redistribution parallel and perpendicular to the electric field vector. A transition from ‹110› to ‹112› type off-centre displacements of Bi relative to the neighbouring Ti atoms are observable with increasing x. Analysis of PDF peak shift with electric field show the effects of Bi-Ti redistribution and onset of piezoelectric lattice strain. The combination of these field-induced ordering mechanisms is consistent with local redistribution of Bi-Ti distances associated with domain reorientation and an overall increase in order of atomic displacements.

Local structure of liquid gallium under pressure

In situ high energy X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) measurements, microtomography and reverse Monte Carlo simulations were used to characterize the local structure of liquid gallium up to 1.9 GPa. This pressure range includes the well-known solid-solid phase transition from Ga-I to Ga-II at low temperature. In term of previous research, the local structure of liquid gallium within this domain was suggested a mixture of two local structures, Ga I and Ga II, based on fitting experimental PDF to known crystal structure, with a controversy. However, our result shows a distinctly different result that the local structure of liquid gallium resembles the atomic arrangement of both gallium phase II and III (the high pressure crystalline phase). A melting mechanism is proposed for Ga, in which the atomic structure of phase Ι breaks up at the onset of melting, providing sufficient free volume for atoms to rearrange, to form the melt.

Local structure study of the orbital order/disorder transition inLaMnO3

We use a combination of neutron and X-ray total scattering measurements together with pair distribution function (PDF) analysis to characterise the variation in local structure across the orbital order--disorder transition in LaMnO$_3$. Our experimental data are inconsistent with a conventional order--disorder description of the transition, and reflect instead the existence of a discontinuous change in local structure between ordered and disordered states. Within the orbital-ordered regime, the neutron and X-ray PDFs are best described by a local structure model with the same local orbital arrangements as those observed in the average (long-range) crystal structure. We show that a variety of meaningfully-different local orbital arrangement models can give fits of comparable quality to the experimental PDFs collected within the disordered regime; nevertheless, our data show a subtle but consistent preference for the anisotropic Potts model proposed in \emph{Phys Rev.\ B} {\bf 79}, 174106 (2009). The key implications of this model are electronic and magnetic isotropy together with the loss of local inversion symmetry at the Mn site. We conclude with a critical assessment of the interpretation of PDF measurements when characterising local symmetry breaking in functional materials.

Strain engineered pyrochlore at high pressure

Strain engineering is a promising method for next-generation materials processing techniques. Here, we use mechanical milling and annealing followed by compression in diamond anvil cell to tailor the intrinsic and extrinsic strain in pyrochlore, Dy2Ti2O7 and Dy2Zr2O7. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray pair distribution function analysis, and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize atomic order over short-, medium-, and long-range spatial scales, respectively, under ambient conditions. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were further employed to interrogate the material in situ at high pressure. High-pressure behavior is found to depend on the species and concentration of defects in the sample at ambient conditions. Overall, we show that defects can be engineered to lower the phase transformation onset pressure by ~50% in the ordered pyrochlore Dy2Ti2O7, and lower the phase transformation completion pressure by ~20% in the disordered pyrochlore Dy2Zr2O7. These improvements are achieved without significantly sacrificing mechanical integrity, as characterized by bulk modulus.

Local Structure of Ion Pair Interaction in Lapatinib Amorphous Dispersions characterized by Synchrotron X-Ray diffraction and Pair Distribution Function Analysis

For many years, the idea of analyzing atom-atom contacts in amorphous drug-polymer systems has been of major interest, because this method has always had the potential to differentiate between amorphous systems with domains and amorphous systems which are molecular mixtures. In this study, local structure of ionic and noninonic interactions were studied by High-Energy X-ray Diffraction and Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis in amorphous solid dispersions of lapatinib in hypromellose phthalate (HPMCP) and hypromellose (HPMC-E3). The strategy of extracting lapatinib intermolecular drug interactions from the total PDF x-ray pattern was successfully applied allowing the detection of distinct nearest neighbor contacts for the HPMC-E3 rich preparations showing that lapatinib molecules do not cluster in the same way as observed in HPMC-P, where ionic interactions are present. Orientational correlations up to nearest neighbor molecules at about 4.3 Å were observed for polymer rich samples; both observations showed strong correlation to the stability of the systems. Finally, the superior physical stability of 1:3 LP:HPMCP was consistent with the absence of significant intermolecular interactions in (∆) in the range of 3.0 to 6.0 Å, which are attributed to C-C, C-N and C-O nearest neighbor contacts present in drug-drug interactions.

Topological Transformation of a Metal-Organic Framework Triggered by Ligand Exchange.

Here we describe the topological transformation of the pores of a new framework in the bio-MOF-100 family (dia-c) into the known isomer (lcs) by doubling the pore volume, which occurs during postsynthesis modifications. During this transformation, reassembling of the metal-organic framework (MOF) building blocks into a completely different framework occurs, involving breaking/forming of metal-ligand bonds. MOF crystallinity and local structure are retained, as determined by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and pair distribution function (PDF) analyses, respectively. We exploited the inherent dynamism of bio-MOF-100 by coupling chemical decorations of the framework using solvent-assisted ligand exchange to the topological change. Following this method and starting from the pristine dense dia-c phase, open lcs-bio-MOF-100 was prepared and functionalized in situ with an iridium complex (IrL). Alternatively, the dia-c MOF could be modified with wide-ranging amounts of IrL up to ca. 50 mol %, as determined by solution 1H NMR spectroscopy, by tuning the concentration of the solutions used and with no evidence for isomer transformation. The single-site nature of the iridium complexes within the MOFs was assessed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and PDF analyses. Ligand exchanges occurred quantitatively at room temperature, with no need of excess of the iridium metallolinker.

Accommodating High Transformation Strains in Battery Electrodes via the Formation of Nanoscale Intermediate Phases: Operando Investigation of Olivine NaFePO4.

Virtually all intercalation compounds exhibit significant changes in unit cell volume as the working ion concentration varies. NaxFePO4 (0 < x < 1, NFP) olivine, of interest as a cathode for sodium-ion batteries, is a model for topotactic, high-strain systems as it exhibits one of the largest discontinuous volume changes (∼17% by volume) during its first-order transition between two otherwise isostructural phases. Using synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction (PXD) and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, we discover a new strain-accommodation mechanism wherein a third, amorphous phase forms to buffer the large lattice mismatch between primary phases. The amorphous phase has short-range order over ∼1nm domains that is characterized by a and b parameters matching one crystalline end-member phase and a c parameter matching the other, but is not detectable by powder diffraction alone. We suggest that this strain-accommodation mechanism may generally apply to systems with large transformation strains.

Orbital Dimer Model for the Spin-Glass State in Y_{2}Mo_{2}O_{7}.

The formation of a spin glass generally requires that magnetic exchange interactions are both frustrated and disordered. Consequently, the origin of spin-glass behavior in Y_{2}Mo_{2}O_{7}-in which magnetic Mo^{4+} ions occupy a frustrated pyrochlore lattice with minimal compositional disorder-has been a longstanding question. Here, we use neutron and x-ray pair-distribution function (PDF) analysis to develop a disorder model that resolves apparent incompatibilities between previously reported PDF, extended x-ray-absorption fine structure spectroscopy, and NMR studies, and provides a new and physical explanation of the exchange disorder responsible for spin-glass formation. We show that Mo^{4+} ions displace according to a local "two-in-two-out" rule on each Mo_{4} tetrahedron, driven by orbital dimerization of Jahn-Teller active Mo^{4+} ions. Long-range orbital order is prevented by the macroscopic degeneracy of dimer coverings permitted by the pyrochlore lattice. Cooperative O^{2-} displacements yield a distribution of Mo-O-Mo angles, which in turn introduces disorder into magnetic interactions. Our study demonstrates experimentally how frustration of atomic displacements can assume the role of compositional disorder in driving a spin-glass transition.

Quantitative X-ray pair distribution function analysis of nanocrystalline calcium silicate hydrates: a contribution to the understanding of cement chemistry.

The structural evolution of nanocrystalline calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) as a function of its calcium to silicon (Ca/Si) ratio has been probed using qualitative and quantitative X-ray atomic pair distribution function analysis of synchrotron X-ray scattering data. Whatever the Ca/Si ratio, the C-S-H structure is similar to that of tobermorite. When the Ca/Si ratio increases from ∼0.6 to ∼1.2, Si wollastonite-like chains progressively depolymerize through preferential omission of Si bridging tetrahedra. When the Ca/Si ratio approaches ∼1.5, nanosheets of portlandite are detected in samples aged for 1 d, while microcrystalline portlandite is detected in samples aged for 1 year. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging shows that the tobermorite-like structure is maintained to Ca/Si > 3.

Anisotropic crystallization in solution processed chalcogenide thin film by linearly polarized laser

The low activation energy associated with amorphous chalcogenide structures offers broad tunability of material properties with laser-based or thermal processing. In this paper, we study near-bandgap laser induced anisotropic crystallization in solution processed arsenic sulfide. The modified electronic bandtail states associated with laser irradiation lead to a distinctive photoluminescence spectrum, compared to thermally annealed amorphous glass. Laser crystalized materials exhibit a periodic subwavelength ripple structure in transmission electron microscopy experiments and show polarization dependent photoluminescence. Analysis of the local atomic structure of these materials using laboratory-based X-ray pair distribution function analysis indicates that laser irradiation causes a slight rearrangement at the atomic length scale, with a small percentage of S-S homopolar bonds converting to As-S heteropolar bonds. These results highlight fundamental differences between laser and thermal processing in this important class of materials.
