A Manufacturability Evaluation of Complex Architectures by Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing

Abstract Additive manufacturing (AM) enables new possibilities for the design and manufacturing of complex metal architectures. Incorporating lattice structures into complex part geometries can enhance strength-to-weight and surface area-to-volume ratios for valuable components, particularly in industries such as medical devices and aerospace. However, lattice structures and their interconnections may result in unsupported down-skin surfaces, potentially limiting their manufacturability by metal AM technologies, such as laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). This study aimed to examine the correlation between down-skin surface area and the manufacturability of lattice structures fabricated using LPBF. Image processing algorithms were used to analyze down-skin surface areas of seven unique lattice designs and to devise quantitative metrics (such as down-skin surface area, discrete surface count, surface interconnectivity, down-skin ratio, over-print/under-print volumes, etc.) to evaluate LPBF manufacturability. The seven lattice designs were subsequently manufactured using maraging steel via LPBF and then examined using imaging using X-ray micro-computed tomography (XCT). The geometric accuracy of the lattice designs was compared with XCT scans of the manufactured lattices by employing a voxel-based image comparison technique. The results indicated a strong relationship between down-skin surface area, surface interconnectivity, and the manufacturability of a given lattice design. The digital manufacturability evaluation workflow was also applied to a medical device design, further affirming its potential industrial utility for complex geometries.

Evolution of pore structure and reactive transport parameters during acid leaching of sandstone uranium ore

The changes in the micro-scale pore structure during the acid leaching of sandstone uranium ore significantly affect its reactive transport parameters, which, in turn, directly influence the leaching efficiency of uranium. Consequently, understanding and managing the dynamic evolution of the pore structure of sandstone at micro-scale during acid leaching is beneficial for enhancing the leaching efficiency of uranium. This paper employs a dynamic continuous water-rock reaction experiment on sandstone uranium ore to simulate the in-situ acid leaching process. Additionally, X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) scanning was utilized to produce three-dimensional (3D) images at various leaching stages. Subsequently, image processing techniques were employed to characterize and parameterize the pore structure within these images. The results revealed that, during the leaching process, mineral dissolution led to an increase in the interconnected pores, while there was a decrease in the isolated pores. Nonetheless, at the leading edge of the sandstone uranium ore, detachment of mineral grains occurred during the leaching process along the direction of fluid flow. The migration of mineral grains resulted in a reduction of interconnected pores and an increase in the isolated pores. The analysis of 3D images indicated that porosity, permeability, the percentage of connected pore area and the reactive surface area exhibited similar variation trends throughout the leaching process. Furthermore, the permeability, the percentage of connected pore area and the reactive surface area displayed a positive correlation with porosity. The study holds valuable insights to develop a deeper understanding of the evolutionary patterns regarding the pore structure during the in-situ acid leaching of sandstone uranium ore.

3D visualization of oil-abundant limon flavedo layer under drying

This study investigated the transformations of lemon flavedo tissues during freeze-drying based on high-resolution X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Contrast-enhanced segmentation, traversal statistic algorithmic analysis, and 3D visualization of lemon peel texture are studied. To avoid pseudo-imaging caused by precipitation of contrast enhancer, low concentration cesium iodide was used to improve X-ray contrast and decrease enlarged inter-cellular region. X-ray μ-CT showed the precipitation of contrast enhancers at the intercellular boundary after freeze-drying. The grayscale thresholding method was presented as the most suitable segmentation method for detecting cell walls due to the high noise level caused by low contrast enhancer concentration in the reconstructed images. The faster water loss at the primary drying stage caused the disintegration of oil glands and induced high porosity of 0.7 % in fresh to 0.84 % in 0.5 h freeze-dried. The results suggest that noise filtering based on voxel statistics provides an efficient approach for the inter and intra-cellular microstructural analysis of excessively watery plant tissues with low contrast enhancer concentration.

Partial auxetic behavior of 3D mesh fabric under compression

The 3D mesh fabric is a key component of automotive seat ventilation systems as it has good compression resistance and creates channels to provide effective circulating airflow. The dimensional inconsistency of fabric sheets by laser cutting to be integrated into car seats and their unrecoverable dimension changes in subsequent cushioning applications are challenging problems. A typical commercialized 3D mesh fabric was observed to shorten and widen under compression, showing an auxetic behavior in the length–thickness section. This counterintuitive partial auxetic behavior accounts for the dimensional variation. A full-size finite element (FE) model of the fabric was established to simulate the complex fabric deformation based on the precise geometry of a unit cell obtained by X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) scanning. The FE simulation reproduced the planar dimension change process of the fabric. The underlying mechanism of partial auxeticity was revealed from the global to local analysis, including fabric global deformation, unit meshes deformation and unit cell geometric structure change. It was shown that buckling of initially post-buckled spacer monofilaments drives in-plane movements of monofilament loops to cause partial auxetic behavior. The partial auxeticity weakens in the compression process due to the gradual intercontact and densification of spacer monofilaments. Different constraints on monofilament loops from adjacent unit cells and multifilament inlays make the deformation uneven in the plane of fabric. It is important to fully analyze the dimensional change, especially the partial auxetic deformation, of the 3D mesh fabric under compression for its practical applications.

Automated extraction of pod phenotype data from micro-computed tomography.

Plant image datasets have the potential to greatly improve our understanding of the phenotypic response of plants to environmental and genetic factors. However, manual data extraction from such datasets are known to be time-consuming and resource intensive. Therefore, the development of efficient and reliable machine learning methods for extracting phenotype data from plant imagery is crucial. In this paper, a current gold standard computed vision method for detecting and segmenting objects in three-dimensional imagery (StartDist-3D) is applied to X-ray micro-computed tomography scans of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) mature pods. With a relatively minimal training effort, this fine-tuned StarDist-3D model accurately detected (Validation F1-score = 96.3%,Testing F1-score = 99.3%) and predicted the shape (mean matched score = 90%) of seeds. This method then allowed rapid extraction of data on the number, size, shape, seed spacing and seed location in specific valves that can be integrated into models of plant development or crop yield. Additionally, the fine-tuned StarDist-3D provides an efficient way to create a dataset of segmented images of individual seeds that could be used to further explore the factors affecting seed development, abortion and maturation synchrony within the pod. There is also potential for the fine-tuned Stardist-3D method to be applied to imagery of seeds from other plant species, as well as imagery of similarly shaped plant structures such as beans or wheat grains, provided the structures targeted for detection and segmentation can be described as star-convex polygons.

Soil aggregate microstructure and microbial community structure mediate soil organic carbon accumulation: Evidence from one-year field experiment

Soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation is easily susceptible to tillage managements, which strongly affect soil structure and microbial community structure. Subsoiling is developed for mitigating soil compaction and thus improving soil structure. Coupled with straw residue incorporation, it is expected not only to enhance this improvement but also to promote organic carbon (C) storage in soil. However, how subsoiling tillage managements change soil aggregate microstructure, microbial community structure and SOC fractions, and how soil aggregate microstructure and microbial community structure affect SOC in the topsoil and subsoil layers are equally unknown. An in-situ incubation field experiment was conducted in a Mollisol in northeastern China and included conventional tillage (CT), subsoiling tillage (ST) and subsoiling tillage with straw residue incorporation (ST + S). The methods of synchrotron-based X-ray micro-computed tomography scanning, phospholipid fatty acid and SOC density fractionation were used to analyze aggregate pore characteristics, microbial community structure and SOC fractions, respectively. The results showed that both ST and especially ST + S not only improved soil aggregate microstructure but also enhanced microbial biomass and then favored SOC accrual in the topsoil (0–20 cm). In the subsoil (20–35 cm), ST + S exerted similar positive effects as those in the topsoil. However, ST only improved soil aggregate microstructure but decreased microbial community biomass and SOC in the subsoil. Moreover, soil aggregate structure characteristics explained (solely explained 6 % in the topsoil and 12 % in the subsoil, respectively) a smaller part of the variation in SOC within aggregates than soil microbial characteristics did (solely explained 15 % in the topsoil and 25 % in the subsoil, respectively). Specifically, bacteria explained 26 % and 66 % of the variation in SOC within aggregates in the topsoil and subsoil, respectively. The porosity of macropores (>100 μm) also explained 25 % of the variation in SOC within aggregates in the topsoil, whereas the porosity of micropores (<30 μm) explained more variation (12 %) than that of macropores (3 %) in the subsoil. Notably, the substantially different interaction mechanism-processed of pore characteristics, microbial structure and SOC between topsoil and subsoil was probably traceable for the variation in the influx of organic C, pore size distribution and microbial adaptability in soil layers. These results would provide new insights on tillage managements strategies for improving soil conditions in terms of optimizing soil aggregate microstructure–microbes–SOC interactions in the topsoil and subsoil layers.

Automated image segmentation of 3D printed fibrous composite micro-structures using a neural network

A new, automated image segmentation method is presented that effectively identifies the micro-structural objects (fibre, air void, matrix) of 3D printed fibre-reinforced materials using a deep convolutional neural network. The method creates training data from a physical specimen composed of a single, straight fibre embedded in a cementitious matrix with air voids. The specific micro-structure of this strain-hardening cementitious composite (SHCC) is obtained from X-ray micro-computed tomography scanning, after which the 3D ground truth mask of the sample is constructed by connecting each voxel of a scanned image to the corresponding micro-structural object. The neural network is trained to identify fibres oriented in arbitrary directions through the application of a data augmentation procedure, which eliminates the time-consuming task of a human expert to manually annotate these data. The predictive capability of the methodology is demonstrated via the analysis of a practical SHCC developed for 3D concrete printing, showing that the automated segmentation method is well capable of adequately identifying complex micro-structures with arbitrarily distributed and oriented fibres. Although the focus of the current study is on SHCC materials, the proposed methodology can also be applied to other fibre-reinforced materials, such as fibre-reinforced plastics. The micro-structures identified by the image segmentation method may serve as input for dedicated finite element models that allow for computing their mechanical behaviour as a function of the micro-structural composition.

Miniature laser powder bed fusion system for in situ synchrotron x-ray micro-computed tomography experiments at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility.

We describe our miniature laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) system for in situ synchrotron x-ray micro-computed tomography (XCT) at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. This replicator was designed to extend the characterization of L-PBF to 3D. This instrument fills in a technical gap because the existing replicators were mostly designed to shed light on the dynamic mechanisms involved in molten pool formation but, therefore, suffered from a lack of 3D information. Technical details regarding the setup and beamline integration are given. Experimental validations via post-mortem XCT scans and in situ scans acquired during experiments conducted at the BM05 beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility are provided. Based on a few illustrative examples, we show that such a replicator opens the path to collect key 3D information that to date could not be available. Our miniature instrument complements the other replicators developed in the world by other research groups that enable operando x-ray imaging (radiography) and operando x-ray diffraction.

Deep learning-based X-ray computed tomography image reconstruction and prediction of compression behavior of 3D printed lattice structures

Complex thermal processing during laser powder bed fusion ( L -PBF) inevitably induces heterogenous and anisotropic defects, which can affect the macromechanical response of components. The initial morphological features of L -PBF printed samples can be reconstructed with X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) scans and the effects of defects on the mechanical properties of the sample can be predicted using image-based finite element modeling. However, due to balling phenomena, several powder particles adhere to the surface of the lattice structure and the mechanical properties of these particles differ from that of the parent material. The predicted modulus and strength of the direct reconstructed models are much higher than the experimental values because of overestimated particle effect. Therefore, these particles should be removed from the CT images before high-fidelity numerical simulation. This paper proposes a new image segmentation method based on a U-Net convolutional neural network to remove adhered particles on the L -PBF manufactured lattice structure from μCT slices. High-fidelity image-based finite element models were constructed with and without the deep learning-based image preprocessing. The results were compared with those obtained from simulations using an ideal CAD model and experimental results. The proposed deep learning-based preprocessing method enables high-precision reconstruction and efficient finite element simulation prediction of additive manufactured lattice structures.

Role of heterogeneous surface wettability on dynamic immiscible displacement, capillary pressure, and relative permeability in a CO2-water-rock system

Surface wettability is one of the major factors that regulate immiscible fluid displacement in porous media. However, the role of pore-scale wettability heterogeneity on dynamic immiscible displacement is rarely investigated. This study investigated the impact of pore-scale wettability heterogeneity on immiscible two-fluid displacement and the resulting macroscopic constitutive relations, including the capillary pressure-water saturation (Pc-Sw) and relative permeability curves. A digital Bentheimer sandstone model was obtained from X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scanning and the rock surface wettability fields were generated based on in-situ measurements of contact angles. A graphics processing unit-accelerated lattice Boltzmann model was employed to simulate the immiscible displacement processes through the primary drainage, imbibition, and second drainage stages in a CO2-water-rock system. We found that pore-scale surface wettability heterogeneity caused noticeable local supercritical CO2 (scCO2) and water redistribution under less water-wet conditions. At the continuum scale, the Pc-Sw curves under the heterogeneous wetting condition were overall similar to those under the homogeneous wetting condition. This is because the impact of local wettability heterogeneity on the large-scale Pc-Sw curve was statistically averaged out at the entire-sample scale. The only difference was that heterogeneous wettability led to a negative entry pressure at the primary drainage stage under the intermediate-wet condition, which was caused by local, scCO2-wet surfaces. The impact of pore-scale wettability heterogeneity was more noticeable on the relative permeability curves. Particularly, the variation of the scCO2 relative permeability curve in the heterogeneous wettability scenario was more significant than that in the homogenous wettability scenario. This suggests that pore-scale wettability heterogeneity enhances the coalescence and snap-off behaviors of scCO2 blobs. This is the first study that systematically investigated the role of pore-scale wettability heterogeneity on dynamic immiscible displacement and associated Pc-Sw curves in complicated, three-dimensional porous media.

The first mainland European Mesozoic click-beetle (Coleoptera: Elateridae) revealed by X-ray micro-computed tomography scanning of an Upper Cretaceous amber from Hungary

Fossil bioinclusions in amber are invaluable source of information on the past evolution and diversity of various organisms, as well as on the paleoecosystems in general. The click-beetles, Elateridae, which originated and greatly diversified during the Mesozoic, are mostly known from the adpression-like fossils, and their diversity in the Cretaceous ambers is only poorly documented. In this study, we describe a new click-beetle based on an incomplete inclusion in ajkaite, an Upper Cretaceous (Santonian) amber from the Ajka Coal Formation from Hungary. We used X-ray micro-computed tomography scanning to reconstruct its morphology because it is deposited in an opaque piece of amber. Our results suggest that the newly described Ajkaelater merkli gen. et sp. nov. belongs to subfamily Elaterinae. It represents the first Mesozoic beetle reported from Hungary, and the first Mesozoic Elateridae formally described from mainland Europe. Our discovery supports an Eurasian distribution and diversification of Elaterinae already in the Cretaceous. The paleoenvironment of the Ajka Coal Formation agrees well with the presumed habitat preference of the new fossil taxon. The discovery of a presumably saproxylic click-beetle shed further light on the yet poorly known paleoecosystem of the Santonian present-day western Hungary.

Galvanic Corrosion of Copper/Carbon Steel Couples Under Simulated Disposal Conditions for Used Nuclear Fuel

Deep geological containment of used nuclear fuel in Canada will rely on both engineered and natural barriers. The engineered barrier system consists of copper-coated used fuel containers and the compacted bentonite clay buffer boxes in which the containers will rest. This work focuses on a possible degradation mode known as galvanic corrosion, between the Cu coating and the carbon steel (CS) substrate of the container, which may occur at a hypothetical through-coating defect. Corrosion of the Cu/CS couple was studied in the presence of various amounts of chloride, bentonite, and oxygen, using electrochemical tests complemented by surface characterization and 3D X-ray imaging. Cu-coated CS specimens with small holes drilled through the coatings (to simulate defects) were galvanically corroded, and corrosion potential and linear polarization resistance measurements, coupled with in situ X-ray micro-computed tomography and post-mortem Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray analysis, were used to evaluate the nature and extent of CS corrosion.In the absence of bentonite, the CS demonstrated the ability to form a protective oxide barrier. Formation of a protective film was associated with higher polarization resistance values, though the linear increase in corrosion volume over time suggests that the protection was not effective, and asymmetric growth of the corroded volume suggests that the film coverage was not uniform. The oxide layer, when cross-sectioned and viewed by scanning electron microscopy, was observed to be thick but porous, and composed largely of lepidocrocite (γ-FeO(OH)).In the presence of bentonite, the very negative corrosion potential and high polarization resistance values observed suggest that the bentonite was acting as a barrier to O2 diffusion to both the Cu and the CS surfaces. Such benign conditions were also reflected in the X-ray micro-computed tomography analysis, which showed minimal corrosion damage and >80% reduction in corrosion rates over bentonite-free conditions. The bentonite also acted as a barrier to transport of aqueous ferric and ferrous species, which allowed the formation of solid corrosion products on the CS at the base of the hole by preventing their upward transport and deposition atop the Cu coating.The results also provide a comparison of the corrosion susceptibility of the Cu/CS interfaces created by cold spray and electrodeposition techniques. In all cases, the Cu/CS interface was more susceptible to corrosion than the bulk CS, due to residual stress and plastic deformation induced by CS surface modification before or during coating application. The lower adhesion of cold-sprayed coatings made the Cu/CS interface of cold-sprayed specimens slightly more susceptible to corrosion than that of electrodeposited samples. The progression of corrosion at an artificial defect in cold spray Cu-coated CS observed by X-ray micro-computed tomography is shown in Figure 1 as an example. In cold-sprayed specimens, interfacial corrosion occurred symmetrically around the drilled hole and corrosion propagated preferentially around Cu splats at the Cu/CS interface. The machining grooves at the interface of electrodeposited specimens caused some preference for interfacial corrosion parallel to those lines, due to introduction of residual stress from plastic deformation. When interfacial corrosion was less extensive, as in the presence of bentonite, corrosion occurred symmetrically around the hole in both electrodeposited and cold-sprayed specimens.These experiments also demonstrated the effectiveness of bentonite slurry in suppressing galvanic corrosion in the Cu/CS couple by creating benign corrosion conditions in the through-coating defect. Figure 2 shows the suppression of corrosion rates by the presence of bentonite.This work provides insight into the conditions which may exacerbate or mitigate galvanic corrosion in the deep geological repository, contributing to the body of research which will support prediction of the long-term performance of the engineered barrier system. Scale attachment and detachment: The role of hydrodynamics and surface morphology

Crystallization fouling presents a significant challenge in a wide range of industries. Accurate understanding of crystal formation is crucial for planning preventative measures and maximizing the effectiveness of maintenance interventions. In this study, we demonstrate that understanding net deposition rates depends on the knowledge of the detachment mechanisms and deposition distribution characteristics. We quantify deposition in a once-through flow set-up and visualize crystal formation through high-resolution X-ray micro-computed tomography scanning. Additionally, we quantify the height distribution of deposited crystals through computed surface texture parameters. Finally, we use computational fluid dynamics, implementing large-eddy simulations turbulence modelling and Eulerian transport of chemical species, to describe bulk and wall reactions and quantify energy and mass transport in turbulent eddies. Results show that attachment and detachment processes depend on fluid hydrodynamics; the influx of material determines the overall deposition to the surface, while the deposition pattern is governed by the surface morphology of the initial surface morphology. Our findings provide a foundation for understanding fouling mechanisms and present a template for developing more accurate prediction models.

Effect of Binder Coatings on the Fracture Behavior of Polymer–Crystal Composite Particles Using the Discrete Element Method

Polymer–crystal composite particles formed by crystals coated with binders are widely used in the fields of medicine, energy, the chemical industry, and civil engineering. Binder content is an important factor in determining the mechanical behavior of composite particles. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the underlying effect of binder coatings in the fracture micromechanics of polymer–crystal composite particles using the discrete element method (DEM). To achieve this objective, realistic particle and crystal shapes were first obtained and reconstructed based on X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) scanning and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. A series of single particle crushing tests and DEM simulations were conducted on real and reconstructed polymer–crystal composite particles, respectively. Based on the experimental and DEM results, the effect of binder coatings on the crushing strength and crushing patterns of polymer–crystal composite particles was measured. Moreover, the micromechanics of the development and distribution of microcracks was further investigated to reveal the mechanism by which binder coatings affect polymer–crystal composite particles.

Multiscale numerical simulation of the forming process of biaxial braids during thermoplastic braid-trusion: Predicting 3D and internal geometry and fiber orientation distribution

Thermoplastic braid-trusion is a composite manufacturing process that combines braiding and pultrusion of hybrid yarns containing reinforcement and polymer fibers. During pultrusion, the melting of the polymer fibers leads to complex morphological changes at the macro, meso and micro scales. We introduce here a multiscale numerical simulation methodology to model this process. In this methodology, braided yarns are modeled as bundles of virtual discrete fibers using chains of truss elements. A thermoplastic composite braided rod was pultruded according to the simulated braid-trusion. During braid-trusion, it was observed that the braid architecture was significantly modified, which was reliably predicted by the model through macroscopic measurements of 7.6% pitch elongation, 44.0% diameter reduction, and 45.0% nominal angle reorientation. The model also predicts yarns’ cross-section area having high local fiber volume fraction of about 60% due to yarn compaction during pultrusion. These predictions of mesoscopic morphology and internal geometry are quantitatively validated using X-ray micro-computed tomography (CT) scans of the braid-truded rod. Three local fiber orientation distributions of the in-plane, out-of-plane, and with respect to the longitudinal braid axis are extracted using micro-scale analysis of virtual fibers. We found that a significant amount of fibers are oriented around specific radii ranging from 30–70% and 60–100% of the outer radius before and after pultrusion, respectively. By contrast, the local fiber orientation is uniformly distributed along the pitch length. The microscale model also shows considerable discrepancies between local and nominal braid angles.

Fractal and microscopic quantitative characterization of unclassified tailings flocs

A series of laboratory investigations are conducted to analyze the effect of flocculant type on the spatial morphology and microstructural characteristics of flocs during the flocculation and settling of tailings. Four flocculant types (i.e., ZYZ, JYC-2, ZYD, and JYC-1) are considered in this study. The fractal characteristics and internal structures of tailings flocs with different flocculant types and settlement heights are analyzed by conducting scanning electron microscopy and X-ray micro-computed tomography scanning experiments based on the fractal theory. Results show that unclassified tailings flocs are irregular clusters with fractal characteristics, and the flocculation effect of the four flocculant types has the following trend: ZYZ > JYC-2 > ZYD > JYC-1. The size and average grayscale value of tailings flocs decrease with the increase in settlement height. The average grayscale values at the top and bottom are 144 and 103, respectively. The settlement height remarkably affects the pore distribution pattern, as reflected in the constructed three-dimensional pore model of tailings flocs. The top part of flocs has relatively good penetration, whereas the bottom part of flocs has mostly dispersed pores. The number of pores increases exponentially with the increase in settlement height. By contrast, the size of pores initially increases and subsequently decreases with the increase in settlement height.

How does porosity heterogeneity affect the transport properties of multibore filtration membranes?

The prediction of pressure and flow distributions inside porous membranes is important if the geometry deviates from single-bore tubular geometries. This task remains challenging, especially when considering local porosity variations caused by lumen- and shell-side membrane skins and macro- and micro-void structures, all of them present in multibore membranes.This study analyzes pure water forward and reverse permeation and backwashing phenomena for a polymeric multibore membrane with spatially-varying porosity and permeability properties using computational fluid dynamics simulations. The heterogeneity of porosity distribution is experimentally characterized by scanning electron microscopy scans and reconstructed cuboids of X-ray micro-computed tomography scans. The reconstructed cuboids are used to determine porosity, pore size distribution, and intrinsic permeability in the membrane’s porous structure in all spatial directions. These position-dependent properties are then applied to porous media flow simulations of the whole membrane domain with different properties for separation layer, support structure, and outside skin layer. Various cases mimicking the pure water permeation, fouling, and backwashing behavior of the membrane are simulated and compared to previously obtained MRI measurements.This work reveals (a) anisotropic permeability values and isoporosity in all directions and (b) differing contributions of each lumen channel to the total membrane performance, depending on the membrane-skin’s properties. This study encourages to pertain the quest of understanding the interaction of spatially distributed membrane properties and the overall membrane module performance of multibore membranes.

Fiber-level numerical simulation of biaxial braids for mesoscopic morphology prediction validated by X-ray computed tomography scan

This paper proposes a modeling methodology to predict the 3D and internal geometry of biaxial braids. Inspired by the digital element approach, braided yarns are modeled as a bundle of virtual fibers. Here we adopt truss elements to a virtual fiber with actual material properties instead of beam elements that have limitations due to the beam flexural rigidity. The mesoscopic morphology prediction of two common braid patterns of the diamond (1/1) and regular (2/2) are validated by a comprehensive quantitative comparison with X-ray micro-computed tomography (CT) scans of braided carbon fibers. We find that the fiber-level frictional behavior is able to explain the jammed state of braids wherein the frictional dissipation energy quickly grows, while the braid has a stable elongation, diameter, and braid angle. Parametric studies illustrate how the increase in the coefficient of friction affects the yarn cross-sectional shape, whereas it has an insignificant effect on the crimp and jammed state of braids. Models also reveal that changing a wide range of the fiber modulus of elasticity hardly impacts the mesoscopic morphology and crimp of the braids.

Olfactory flow in the sea catfish, Ariopsis felis (L.): Origin, regulation, and resampling

The olfactory epithelium of the sea catfish, Ariopsis felis, is found on a pinnate array of lamellae (the olfactory rosette) housed within a nasal chamber. The nasal anatomy of A. felis suggests an ability to capture external water currents. We prepared models from X-ray micro-computed tomography scans of two preserved specimens of A. felis. We then used dye visualisation and computational fluid dynamics to show that an external current induced a flow of water through a) the nasal chamber and b) the sensory channels of the olfactory rosette. The factors responsible for inducing flow through the nasal chamber are common to fishes from two other orders. The dye visualisation experiments, together with observations of sea catfishes in vivo, indicate that flow through the nasal chamber is regulated by a mobile nasal flap. The position of the nasal flap – elevated (significant flow) or depressed (reduced flow) – is controlled by the sea catfish's movements. Flow in the sensory channels of the olfactory rosette can pass through either a single channel or, via multiple pathways, up to four consecutive channels. Flow through consecutive sensory channels (olfactory resampling) is more extensive at lower Reynolds numbers (200 and 300, equivalent to swimming speeds of 0.5–1.0 total lengths s−1), coinciding with the mean swimming speed of the sea catfishes observed in vivo (0.6 total lengths s−1). Olfactory resampling may also occur, via a vortex, within single sensory channels. In conclusion, olfactory flow in the sea catfish is regulated and thoroughly sampled by novel mechanisms.
