Fumarate intercalated layered double hydroxides (LDH-NC-Fu and LDH-RPB-Fu) are prepared by normal coprecipitation and rotating packing bed respectively and then added into waterborne epoxy coating as filler in order to enhance the corrosion resistance of coating. The obtained LDH powders are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and laser particle size distribution. Compared to LDH-NC-Fu, LDH-RPB-Fu has a more regular shape, smaller particle size, narrower distribution and the preparation time of LDH slurry is greatly shortened. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and salt spray test show that the addition of LDH-RPB-Fu can improve the corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy coatings more than LDH-NC-Fu, which is attributed to the uniform dispersion of LDH-RPB-Fu in the resin and able to load more corrosion inhibitor.
