Bis((S)-5,5-dimethylthiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid) protium chloride hydrate [(C6H11NO2S)2H]Cl•H2O, a salt containing a hemi-protonated zwitterion

The X-ray crystal structure of bis((S)-5,5-dimethylthiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid) protium chloride hydrate, I, has been determined. Crystals are orthorhombic, P212121, with cell dimensions a = 6.463(2), b = 11.832(3), c = 23.966(6) Å, and Z = 4. The structure was solved by standard methods and refined to R = 0.073, Rw = 0.064 for 2969 independent reflections. Compound I is composed of two zwitterion molecules bridged through a proton which causes a very short hydrogen bond, O … O′ = 2.450 Å. The proton is located roughly halfway between the two carboxylate oxygen atoms, but is not on a special crystallographic position. Characteristic features of the infrared and Raman spectra, mass spectra, and 1H and 13C nmr spectra are discussed.

Copper(II) and iron(III) complexes of N-nitroso- N- alkylhydroxylamines, and the X-ray crystal structures of bis( N-nitroso- N-isopropylhydroxylaminato)copper(II) and tris( N-nitroso- N-propylhydroxylaminato)iron(III)

N-nitroso- N-alkylhydroxylamines have been prepared by hydrolysis of the mixture obtained by reaction of nitric oxide with Grignard reagents, and stabilized as their copper(II) or iron(III) complexes, Cu(RN 2O 2) 2 and Fe(RN 2O 2) 3, where R is, for example, Me, Et, Pr i , Bu iso, Ph, n-C 8H 17 or n-C 12H 25. The complexes have been characterized by analytical, magnetic and spectroscopic measurements. By single-crystal X-ray methods Cu(Pr i N 2O 2) 2 has been found to be trans-planar and Fe(Pr n N 2O 2) 3 has a facial octahedral structure; in each complex the NO bond lengths are equal with no significant variation between the copper and iron complexes.

Neutral and anionic 2-methyl-6-nitrophenyl palladium(II) complexes. The X-ray crystal structure of bis(benzyltriphenylphosphonium)trans-di-µ-chloro-bis[chloro(2-methyl-6-nitrophenyl)palladate(II)]–acetone (1/2)

By reacting HgR2(R = C6H3Me-2,NO2-6) with [PPh3(CH2Ph)]2[Pd2Cl4(µ-Cl)2](2 : 1) in refluxing acetone the complex trans-[PPh3(CH2Ph)]2[Pd2Cl2(µ-Cl)2R2]·2Me2CO (1) crystallizes in high yield. The anion is a centrosymmetric dimer with both palladium atoms having square-planar co-ordination. The mutually trans chloro ligpnds, one terminal and the other bridging, have similar Pd–Cl bond lengths [2.322(4) and 2.334(4)A, respectively], both being shorter than the other Pd–Cl bonds [2.448(4)A] corresponding to the bridging chloro ligands trans to the phenyl groups. The angles between the phenyl rings and the ‘PdCl2(µ-Cl)2’ moiety plane or their own nitro group planes are 73.3 or 140.2°, respectively. The shortest Pd–O distance [2.893(6)A] is too long to assume intramolecular bonds. This complex is the first aryl palladium derivative of such a stoicheiometry described so far. From its solutions in dimethyl sulphoxide (dmso) the complex [PdCl2(R)(dmso)]– can be isolated. Complex (1) also reacts with PPh3(1 : 4) or bidentate ligands (1 : 2) to form trans-[PdCl(R)(PPh3)2] or cis-[PdCl(R)(L–L)](L–L = 2,2′-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline) respectively.

Thermally induced phase transition and X-ray crystal structure of bis(N,N′-dimethyl-1,2-ethanediamine)di-isothiocyanatonickel(II)

The complex [Ni(MeNHCH2CH2NHMe)2(NCS)2](1) has been synthesised and characterised by X-ray crystallography. It undergoes an irreversible endothermic phase transition (452.5–468.5 K, ΔH= 13.4 kJ mol–1) to species (2) which reverts to (1) in a humid atmosphere. Complex (1) crystallises in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a= 13.069(2), b= 9.783(3), c= 15.074(4)A, β= 111.40(2)°, and Z= 4. The structure has been solved by Patterson and successive Fourier methods and refined to R= 0.032 for 1 240 independent observed reflections. The co-ordination around the nickel atom, lying on a crystallographic inversion centre, is close to octahedral with the two thiocyanate N atoms in trans position. The chelate rings exist in the δλ conformation. For complex (2), a=b= 8.16(3), c= 7.53(2)A, α=β= 107.0(2), γ= 73.6(3)°, and Z= 1. Crystallographic and i.r. spectroscopic data suggest a non-centrosymmetric structure for (2) with a qualitative change in the conformation of the complex to δδ or λλ.

The preparation and x-ray crystal structures of bis(4R-oxazolidine-4′-carboxylato)copper(II) (R = methyl, phenyl)

The base-catalyzed condensation reactions of formaldehyde with the copper(II) chelates of α-alanine and C-phenylglycine result in the formation of bis(4R-oxazolidine-4′-carboxylato)copper(II) where R = methyl and phenyl respectively. The 4-methyl complex, C 10H 20N 2O 8Cu, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1/ n with a = 9.141(2), b = 7.335(3), c = 11.112(3) Å, β = 103.87(2)° and Z = 2. The structure has been refined to R = 0.026 and R w = 0.031 based on 749 independent reflections collected, 651 used. The geometry about copper is essentially a (4 + 2)-elongated octahedral structure. The 4-phenyl derivative, C 20H 20N 2O 6Cu, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1/ c with a = 11.939(4), b = 8.887(2), c = 8.611(3) Å, β = 95.61(3)° and Z = 2. Refinement of the structure converged to R = 0.062 and R w = 0.071 based on 1003 reflections collected and 865 used. The structure of the 4-phenyl complex resembles that of the 4-methyl derivative and differs mainly from the latter in being anhydrous.

Purification and X-ray crystal structure of bis[tris(trimethylsilyl)methyl]diarsene

The crystal and molecular structure of (Me3Si)3CAsAsC(SiMe3)3 has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The diarsene crystallizes in space group P(no. 2), with a= 9.151 (3), b= 12.682(2), c= 15.537(4)A, α= 70.07(2), β= 89.61(2), γ= 87.88(2)°, and Z= 2. The compound is isostructural with (Me3Si)3CPPC(SiMe3)3 and adopts a trans-planar conformation with AsAs = 2.245(1), 2.243(1)A and As–As–C = 106.2(2), 106.4(2)° In two crystallographically independent molecules. Trends in the structures of REE′R′[EE′N or P, RR′C6H2But3–2,4,6; EE′P, RR′C(SiMe3)3 or NBut(SiMe3); EE′As, RR′C(SiMe3)3 or RC6H2But3–2,4,6,R′CH(SiMe3)2; EP,E′As, RC6H2But3–2,4,6,R′CH(SiMe3)2] are discussed.

Stable gold(I) complexes with chelate rings: solution studies of bis(phosphino)ethane complexes and X-ray crystal structure of bis[1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane]gold(I) hexafluoroantimonate–acetone (1/1)

Bis-chelated four-co-ordinate gold(I)–phosphine complexes of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) and 1,2-bis(diethylphosphino)ethane (depe) exhibit exceptionally high thermodynamic and kinetic stability both in the solid state and in solution at ambient temperatures. Their formation in solution has been studied by conductivity and 31P n.m.r. titrations. Complexes of [Au(depe)2]+ and [Au(dppe)2]+ have been prepared and characterized. These species exist in solution even at Au : bis(phosphine) ligand ratios of 1 : 0.75. The mixed species [Au(depe)(dppe)]+ exhibited a trans-gold 31P–31P n.m.r. coupling of 52 Hz. The title complex was crystallized and shown by X-ray crystallography to contain gold(I) with a flattened tetrahedral (closely D2d) co-ordination geometry (P–Au–P, 85–130°) chelated by two dppe ligands with Au–P bond lengths of 2.39–2.42 A. Crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/n. with a= 18.685(2), b= 19.414(2), c= 15.096(1)A, β= 91.69(1)°, and Z= 4; 4 811 reflections refined to R 0.062.

Structure of bis(p-bromophenyl)tellurium(IV) dichloride

The X-ray crystal structure of bis(p-bromophenyl)tellurium(IV) dichloride has been determined: R = 0.025. The crystals were triclinic, [Formula: see text], a = 8.000(7) Å, b = 11.811(11) Å, c = 7.978(6) Å, α = 101.85(7)°Å, β = 98.73(6)°, γ = 80.95(7)°, and Z = 2. The compound exhibits a ψ-trigonal bipyramidal arrangement of ligands around tellurium with weak secondary interactions between tellurium and bromine atoms in adjacent molecules.

Bis[4-(alkyl- and bis[4-(phenyl-mercaptomethyl)imidazole]copper(II) diperchlorates (alkyl = n-propyl, t-butyl, or benzyl) and 1,6-bis(imidazol-4′-yl)-2,5-dithiahexanecopper(II) diperchlorate were prepared. The cationic moieties of these complexes undergo electrochemically reversible redox reactions at the potentials E½=+0.23 to +0.36 V vs. s.c.e. in methanol containing [NBun4][BF4](0.1 mol dm–3) as a supporting electrolyte. Kinetic studies on the reductions of these complexes with ferrocene in methanol reveal that precursor complexes are formed prior to electron transfer between the reactants; the formation constants of the precursor complexes are in the range 9.7–32.2 dm3 mol–1. The activation entropies for the electron-transfer reaction were obtained as positive values, +33 to +71 J K–1 mol–1, which suggests that the precursor complex undergoes desolvation in a transition state. Electronic absorption and e.s.r. spectra of the copper(II) complexes as well as the X-ray crystal structure of bis[4-(n-propylmercaptomethyl)imidazole]copper(II) diperchlorate are described. The X-ray crystal structure shows the copper to be centrosymmetrically co-ordinated by two thioether sulphur atoms [Cu–S 2.397(2)A], two imidazole nitrogen atoms [Cu–N 1.940(6)A], and two oxygen atoms from unidentate perchlorate ions [Cu–O 2.594(6)A].

The reaction of S2NAsF6 with halogens: preparation and X-ray crystal structure of bis(difluorothio)nitronium hexafluoroarsenate(V), (SF2)2NAsF6; preparation of (SBr)2NAsF6, and vibrational spectrum and normal-co-ordinate analysis of the (SX)2N+(X = Cl or Br) cations

Solutions of S2NAsF6 in liquid SO2 react with elemental chlorine and bromine yielding (SX)2NAsF6(X = Cl or Br), essentially quantitatively. No reaction was detected with iodine. The vibrational spectrum of (SBr)2N+ was similar to that of (SCl)2N+ of known structure, implying a similar structure for the bromine derivative. This conclusion was supported by a normal-co-ordinate analysis of (SX)2N+. The analysis was consistent with some positive interaction between the halogen atoms in (SX)2N+, possibly accounting for the cis planar geometry of these cations. Attempts to prepare (SF)2NAsF6 were unsuccessful. However, (SF2)2NAsF6 was synthesised by the reaction of S2NAsF6 and XeF2 in liquid SO2F2, essentially quantitatively. The structure of (SF2)2NAsF6 was determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystals are orthorhombic with a= 14.909(1), b= 9.843(4), c= 12.113(1)A, and Z= 8. The structure was refined in space group Pbca to a conventional R factor of 0.076 for 902 independent reflections with I 2σ(I). It consists of discrete (SF2)2N+ and AsF6– with some cation–anion interactions. The (SF2)2N+ cation has approximate C2v. symmetry with essentially eclipsed fluorine–sulphur bonds as viewed along the sulphur–sulphur axis. The average S–N and S–F distances are 1.551(10) and 1.523(8)A, and the average FSF and FSN bond angles are 94.0(5) and 100.2(6)°. The SNS bond angle is 121.1(6)°. The vibrational spectrum of (SF2)2NAsF6 is reported.

XRay crystallography shows that glycinohydroxamic acid (gha) forms a bis complex with nickel(II), Ni(gha)2, which is the first example of co-ordination of a transition metal by a hydroxamic acid via the nitrogen atom of the NHOH group.

X-Ray crystal structures of bis(cyclopentadienyl)tin and bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)lead

The X-ray crystal structures of bis(cyclopentadienyl)tin (1) and the new compound bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)lead (2) show that (i) both compounds are monomeric in the solid state and (ii) the C5H5 and Me5C5 rings in compounds (1) and (2), respectively, are bonded in the pentahapto-manner.
